Shadow of the Colossus: The Movie!

Post by Ruldra »

One of the most cinematic games is now making it way towards cinemas. The Shadow of the Colossus video game is being developed by producer Kevin Misher (Fighting, Public Enemies, Case 39) at Columbia Pictures. Hollywood's new favorite fanboy writer, Justin Marks of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Voltron, and Masters of the Universe, has been hired to write the screenplay. The game, which first hit shelves in 2005, follows a character known as Wander, who along with his horse Agro, travels across a western-style landscape to defeat enemies known as Collosi, while Wander tries to save the girl Mono.

This isn't the first time the game has been seen in the movies - it was featured in Reign Over Me, although those scenes just had Adam Sandler playing the game. Shadow of the Colossus was not only a big hit in sales, but also a big hit with critics, and a few years ago was widely heralded as one of the best games of the year. Although I know its got the makings of a good movie, I'm concerned that Justin Marks will come up with something a little too cheesy, a little too Hollywood, especially considering Street Fighter wasn't that great. Hopefully they find a good director who will make sure this stays as true to the game as possible.

It was great as a game, although it had a massive amount of slowdown. As a movie? Yeah right.

ICO would make much more sense, but even then, that's missing the point. ICO was about finding your way around, finding cracks/walls and stuff like that. They can't capture such a thing in a movie. With SotC, it's just going to be some dude running around killing gigantic bosses.

There's a slim chance it'll be good, but I still have my doubts.

Either would make great, indie short films (20-30 minutes), w/ little to no dialogue, and of course someone with some type of talent in film expression directing and writing.

Couldn't be any worse than the actual game. Here's hoping the camera angles won't suck ass in the movie. Unless they want to make it authentic and true-to-the-game.

Making this is a bad, bad idea. The game was a pure masterpiece from start to finish... Bar none one of the best games I have ever played. Why not leave the good stuff in peace? I'm hoping this is a late April's fool or something.

This is just the worst game-to-movie idea I have ever heard. SotC was fantastic, yes, but it is also frequently - and with good reason - heralded as a work of art in the game industry because it utilized the interactive medium so well. First, it's a series of boss fights with very little plot development except at the very beginning and very end, and only one character for the vast majority of the story. That already makes it hard to translate to a movie. Second, the game connected with the player to induce emotions in a way few other games do. Killing the colossi and interacting with them made you feel for them, and question what you were doing. Exploring and traveling with your horse built a connection with it that you never even noticed until right before the final colossus (if you played the game you know what I'm referring to). The game excels precisely because it's a video game, and draws on the strengths of the medium in a way that few other games do. Translating the game's plot to a movie, while possible, is just completely ignoring the essence of what makes it so groundbreaking.

With that, you can imagine how good the movie will be...

SotC is a masterpiece that should be left alone, really.

This is going to be bad. The new Street Fighter movie looks really generic.

Why not just let the game designers direct it?

They could make a good go of it by changing stuff around. The first 30 minutes is about the sacrifice itself in the village that we don't see in the game. The next 20 minutes is reaching the forbidden land.. the next 50 minutes is about reaching each collossi and destroying it. Although 16 is probably too many. 5 is probably more climatically possible.

I don't understand why game-movie transitions get the shitest directors and writers ever.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Starring Ashton Kutcher as Wander: "Dude, where's the boss?"

...and the re-animated corpse of André the Giant as Colossus #1: "It's not my fault being the biggest and the strongest. I don't even exercise."
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Werner Herzog is the only director I can think of who could pull off a good Shadow of the Colossus movie, and he certainly wouldn't work from a screenplay by Justin Marks. In other words, this is going to fail HARD. Prove me wrong, Hollywood.

I think Hollywood has the worst reputation of any other cultural industry. Basically, if anything is reached by hollywood's evil clutches, it's RIP.

We should consider these "movie adaptations" roughly the same way talebans "adapt" the giant Buddha statues to their tastes.

Exactly.

The mood and theme of the game was carefully maintainted throughout. There are just so many ways a film adaptation could go wrong.

Well if Del Toro was doing it, and they kept it in the same language as the video game, then maybe yes.

This sounds completely terrible. The way they butchered Resident Evil has made me lose all hope of ever seeing a good videogame movie.

If I had the money to fund it, I'd have anime studio Madhouse animate an hour-long OVA for Ikaruga. It would focus on the character development of Shinra and Kagari, perhaps hint at some kind of romantic interest but never delve into the subject (think "Princess Mononoke", in terms of sexual tension), have cel-shaded CG dogfights (ala Appleseed 2004), Hitoshi Sakimoto returning to compose the soundtrack... It could be something epic, as long as it's presented in a way that it won't alienate newcomers nor insult the intelligence of the fans.
