Philosoma?

Post by ryosnk »

I just saw this in gamecrazy and the clerk said it is one of the best unknown shooters on the psone. Is he right or is he trying just to sell me a game (the games was $7)?

Of course he's trying to sell the game, it's his job. That said, it's probably worth the $7. Personally I don't like the ever-switching viewpoints (some of them are absolutely not designed with gameplay in mind) and some other stuff, but some people seem to like the game. Definately not the "best unknown shooter", though...

It's...not so hot. It really shows its age, and the focus is on graphical effects and FMV rather than gameplay. Might be worth a try for $7, though.

It's not that great, but playing it I had the feeling it served as a blueprint for einhander in so many ways. I'm mainly talking how the story proceeds, how the stages are blend together and the use of fmv... I even said at some point "could it be that ex-scej went to Squaresoft at some point?

Sure, the pow switch is annoying.

I really enjoy Philosoma. It's not a traditional shooter - it's got vertical levels, horizontal levels, straight ahead levels, from behind levels. 4 weapons right from the start that you select with the shoulder buttons. Tons of well-done FMV and lots of voices (reasonably well done, too, which is a surprise... lots of chatter during the lengthy FMV and during actual gameplay). I'd say this game is more a sum of the parts... nothing done outstandingly well, but lots of nice things that add up to a good game. It's not the best shooter out there... but it's a fun game as long as you don't mind some twists and some experimentation in your shooters. For $7, I'd say it's worth a try!

The end boss alone makes the game worth it. One of my favorite final bosses ever, though the game up to that point isn't that great.

The multiple view points are quite annoying & the fact that the Bosses flash with a very bright red colour when you shot them, doesn't allow you to admire their graphics.

The FMVs though have the best quality I've seen on the PS-1.

The gameplay isn't that good.
I would say it's worth around 5$

The game is alright. Trying to get used to the different views. I just checked gamefaqs and it says that phalanx is unlockable on certain older versions.

Bonus Game
To play the hidden Phalanx game hold Start + Select on controller 2 while the game is booting (Note: This only works on early releases of the game).

Not to mention that it was the second shooter released for Sony's new console(Raiden Project was the first). It almost was a launch title, as it was featured as a non-playable demo that was included with the first PS1.

Its actually pretty good, just short of great.
It kinda has an R-Type meets Einhander feel to it.

For $7 you can't go wrong. You'll get at least a few hours of fun out of it.

Erm. Tiny Phalanx is in Zero Divide, I've never heard of Philosoma (any release) having this. GameFaqs just might be wrong this time. I know, I can't believe it either!
