new to the site

Post by googlymoogly42 »

I just wanted to say whats up. Been an avid gamer since 7yrs. old and a shmup fan off and on since then too. But just decided the other night to begin collecting shmups. Just wanted some advice as where to begin. I own an am. dreamcast with mars matrix. I have an modded saturn with tf5, layer section 2, sokyogurentai. A wii with blazing lazers, gate of thunder, final soldier, super star soldier. A am. ps2 with r type final raiden 3 and ps1 strikers. Is there enough quality shmups on jap ps2 to import one. also same for x360. I have been considering both for awile now. Also want to get the non console arcade shmups on mame but want to be able to play them on my t.v. I have a 50 inch samsung dlp and was wondering the best connections i should use also the best controllers i should get for mame.

The sad thing is I love shmups but are not very good at them. My only accomplishments are 1cc legendary wings on nes at age 10 and raiden on ps1 in 1997. Regarding raiden i made it to 2-4nbefore i died since it loops. I don't know if that counts as a 1cc.

Well anyways I love the site and though i am a fan of all games i feel that i want to really give shmups much more attention now.

welcome.

I think the PS2 shmups warrant a JPS2 but you would be better to spend 30-50$ and just buy swap magic instead. Not only will it allow you to play imported shmups but also burned copies so that you can just back up the expensive imports and keep the originals in pristine condition.

Awesome games such as Dodonpachi DOJ DV, Espgaluda, and Thunder Force VI are still in print as well as the overpriced Trigger Heart Exelica.

Then there is also a slew of games that are out of print that are worth getting your hands on. Mushihimesama, Ibara, Psyvariar 2 Ultimate Final.

The links in this post are affiliate links and I appreciate if you would be willing to use them but if you wish not to, you can find the above in print titles also by visiting www.play-asia.com

I've seen TF6 for 2900 yen on Yahoo Japan so I would avoid purchasing it off Play-Asia. Actually, I've heard it's a pretty poor game in general, but I haven't played it to confirm.

Welcome.

If you want to try some shmups emulated and play them on your tv give Coin Ops emulator a try on Xbox.

Please notice the fact that 90% of JP PS1 shmups work flawlessly on the
JP PS2 as well. Only important ones not too is Toaplan Shooting Battle & the off speed stage in Gradius Gaiden.

Get that Japanese PS2 and you'll be glad you did.

DC is great from any region btw, since DC-X plays all imports on any system without a hitch. :)

Oh, and welcome to the forum!!!!!

Collect all you like, as long as you give them all a really good go!

And yes, PS2 is great, but there's a tonne more variety on PS1, DC and Saturn....

+1. To both choices.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

There is a thread that gets a fair bit of use when it crops up on the first page, but the mods never stickied it. A shame, because it was all quite chatty and a good way for new guys to get into the forum.

I was thinking the same thing. In the Board FAQ (or some other obvious place) it'd be nice if we had something like what DistroWatch has for top Linux distros, but for shmup developers. Sure, you could look at the Top 25 to see what's popular, but look at last year's top 5:

- Gradius V
- Ikaruga
- Dodonpachi Daioujou
- Battle Garegga
- Dodonpachi

With the exception of DDP and DOJ, they all have significantly different gameplay mechanics (and difficultly levels). And that's just the top 5, let alone the other 20, let alone the honorable mentions. That's a lot of unfamiliar games to sort through, especially if it's just a list of titles.

I'd volunteer to write up something myself if I was actually knowledgeable.
