Games you've thrown a sickie to play?

Post by Marc »

Come on, we've all faked illness from work/college/uni whatever to play at least one title, I wanna know what yours was.

For me, first game that I ever really couldn't drag myself away from to that extent was the PC version of Deus Ex. I was utterly hooked from the minute I played the sucker, started on a Tuesday evening and for the first time ever didn't go back to work for the rest of the week.

I'd recently had conjunctivitus though, so rather than the usual excuse of a flu bug (seems to be the popular choice), I had a sudden reoccurrence of that

So what was your game, and what was your excuse?

Good topic.

I failed an art course in college for Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee when it came out. I kept leaving early to go home and play it before my "real" classes.

Recently, I faked strep throat to take a week off work. During that time I played the hell out of Donpachi and Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne.

Final Fantasy 2 & 3 and Phantasy Star 4 are the only games I've cut class for.
I clearly remember the dehydration and the lack of sleep those three titles cost me. The funny thing is that I've never had that urge to do that again, especially with any of the games from these past two generations. Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox came the closes though.

I've never cut class or played sick in order to play a game, but if you excuse the off-topic-ness of this post, it did remind me of an old experience...way back in the mid-90's I remember being sick, and my dad rented Chrono Trigger for me, and I played it for the first time...by the next day I was better, I think I subconsciously willed myself into getting back to full strength in order to fully experience the thing, heh. And they say athletic activity is better for you than video games...liars, all of 'em! ;)

I've never had a day off for a game, but when I was ill etc I'd play on a game for sure. mostly when I was younger about 7-14.

I skipped an entire week of Grade 7 to play Final Fantasy II. That was fun, I still did well that year...which, incidentally, made me start to realize that school is largely a waste of time :P

Also faked a sick day in Grade 4 to play Life Force. 1CC'd it about a week later.

And my all time best shmupping memory - in Grade 12, myself and two friends skipped a day of classes (with sore throats.. *cough, cough*), drove an hour and a little bit, and spent the day in an arcade playing Galaga, Contra, Pac-Man, air-hockey, and Metal Slug, drinking beers, and eating pizza. I miss those days!

Morrowind has caused me plenty of cut classes and all-nighters. Now I find that game kinda boring. Go figure.

Erm...how about a week off work for Zelda Ocarina Of Time & Half Life.
About 4 or 5 days off when Radiant Silvergun first came out.
3 days off when my cab arrived and I played the hell out of Dragon Blaze.
2 days off for Resident Evil 2 & 4
2 days off for Espgaluda
I figure I can take a day or two off for Mushihimesama!
In fact the only time i'm EVER off sick is when a game that i've really been looking forward to comes out.

In middle school a friend let me borrow Donkey Kong Country and Final Fantasy III. After he gave them to me in homeroom, I went to the nurses office and complained about my stomach hurting me until she called me mom to pick me up.

I've never actually skipped school to play games (I'm more of a "Stay up way too late and sleep through class" type) but there were a few classes I had that I pretty much did nothing but play Solitaire on my PPC in.

During my senior year of high school I'd spend the nights playing Quake and the days (at class) sleeping. My GPA didn't really suffer from it since I was such a shitty student to begin with.

I've skipped a few night classes to play Raiden Fighters Jet and Strikers Plus. Feels weird playing in a near-deserted student center at night, which is usually crowded and rowdy in the daytime. I could actually hear the sound effects. :)

I pulled a lot of unnecessary all-nighters playing games. Or sacrificed critical hours of sleep.

On some occasions, I ended up calling in sick from work, faking a fever or whatnot, just to get those hours of sleep in. That dosen't happen at all these days since I need the money, but I still go to work on some days with only 3-5 hours of sleep in because I made an improvement on my medal chaining on Trizeal or went on a "AA/AAA rampage" on IIDX.

It's a sad, sad sickness. :/

Shit, I once did just over 40 hours without sleep, and that fucked me up. 60? And trying to concentrate on a game while doing so...

Can't say I've ever skived work for gaming but I did forget to turn up to my best friends wedding reception because I was too absorbed in the Turrican 2002 level editor.

Shit, doesn't that make skipping work look kinda amateur?

PSO did me too jp

Fukkin hell, that was insane on the phone bill parents were very pissed off.
I reckon i put nearl 1000 hrs into that game, pretty pointless though but good fun at the time.

I used to do all niters in pso myself playing the japanese in battle mode and challenge teams, honestly I'd pay £100 for a few days of solid challenge mode with some of the old pros of the dc version, couldn't be bothered with blue burst. leaving pso was one of the best things i ever did.

Days sick? yeah missed a few to play panzer dragoon saga on release day was worth it.

still got the grades for uni though and now here i am waiting for my final results a week from today... shitting it...

During my last year of high school, I slept in class because of Quake 2 DM. The pace of that game was perfect along with the weapon balance. I remember launching a rocket across the courtyard in the Edge map against some unsuspecting player riding the elevator. Total gib...

I've 'twisted an ankle' twice or thrice to play games; the first time was when I first installed MAME on my computer. 6 hrs of Giga Wing!

When I was in grade school, I malingered to 1CC Contra. Very worth it.

OT, but I have missed my niece's baptism and various weddings (on the pretext of attending symposia and studying for exams) to watch porno flix
