Started remixing shmup music.

Post by Zweihander »

Nothing special, but here's what I have so far:

http://www.myspace.com/djpowarmr

Named myself "DJ Pow Armr", after those adorable and supposedly-harmless POW Armors... which usually end up being the #1 cause of death for a friend of mine whenever he plays R-Type.

I've got some remixes planned, like Psyvariar 2, Ketsui, Panzer Dragoon II (yeah, I know, not a shmup), maybe some stuff from Thunder Force and Iridion 2 somewhere down the road...

Tried remixing the first stage from Solar Striker but it didn't work out so well. Kind of a shame... I love that game and its music.

Anyone have some ideas for tracks to remix?

Hmm. Sounds pretty cool. You know there's a shmups community covers album in the works. Not sure if there's room on it, but you might inquire if you're interested. I've got a couple of trax on it myself. Shmups re-mixes/re-builds are always fun to hear.

I like how you covered "Adam". I'm very gradually re-doing the music of Darius Twin and Darius Force. So far I'm up to 2 songs for "Twin" *need to upload the new one to my site.

Adam didn't come out quite how I wanted it, so thanks, glad someone likes it. I recorded vocal bits of myself singing different notes, then pieced them together afterward. I wanted to make it quiet, in the background... but I think they're barely audible. :/ Ah well. You can hear it here-and-there, I think.

I love the original "Adam"... one of my favorite final boss tracks in all of gaming. It just bleeds "this is the last struggle, don't let the salt from the sweat burn your eyes, don't let the dying breath at the end of this fight be yours".

Would love to hear your remixes. If there's room, I'd be glad to contribute a track. Think I'll look into it, thanks for the tip.

My next project will be something based off of "Last Boss" from Psyvariar 2.

I'm confused... were you asking me to make a Zanac remix...? But, thanks. And yeah, I could do something with Axelay at some point. Need some material to work with. Currently I'm covering all those tracks that I felt were either imbued with some kind of dramatic epic-ness (ala "Adam") or just take sheer ridiculousness and find a way to remix it (like the Space Invaders mix).

Finished a new one this morning, remixed "Gluon" from Psyvariar 2. Dunno if I like how it came out. Like the Darius track, I didn't have much to work with, so I fear it may be too repetitive. :/ Tried to keep things mixed up enough to deter that, though.

Oh geez... I love Border Down's music, and that's why I'm hesitant to mess with it. :( It's definitely on my list of stuff to do after getting some more experience, though. G.Rev = fucking GODS of shmup music...

I'm definitely staying away from anything Touhou... That's IOSYS' territory.

Holy shit, though, Korg DS-10 Synthesizer (which is what I'm using) is easily the best $30 I've spent so far this year. Most addictive DS game since Meteos and Ketsui... and it's not even a fucking game. It's sad, I haven't even played any games lately except TF2, and my DS is primarily used for MP3-playing and Korg. :/ Don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing... Whenever I go back to Ketsui, I'm definitely going to suck some ass at it...

Hey, while Ketsui: Demo Label is demo-tastic, I object in defense of Meteos! If not for the music (and the lack of Wi-Fi but it was released way before that even came into play for DS) that game would have been perfect.

fire shark would be my fav. listening to your stuff, i think it's the closest to what you're doing already anyways, but it's just classic in my opinion. proper old-school. here's some vids on youtube if you wanna check it out.

regarding the ketsui thing, glad you take it in good humour :) everyone hates me, and i'm still here 8) all i will say is that some people will always differ from your point of view on some things, but it's up to you on how much you want to argue it, sometimes it's best to say your piece and leave it at that :)

anyways, have fun with your music project :)

Holy shit, why haven't I heard of Fire Shark... Shit looks intense, like it plows Raiden 1 & 2 deep in the ass. Definitely going to keep a lookout for a cart at semi-local mom+pop game stores...

And yeah, while I fully acknowledge Ketsui: Demo Label is incredibly demolicious, it's still become one of my favorite DS games because there's nothing else that comes close to proper bullet-hell on the system. :( Hell, I pre-ordered the sucker, and second copy which is still sealed and worth $130+. 8) Now to wait for the economy to work its way out of the shitter and sell that one.

But yeah, Fire Shark. Definitely on my list of things to cover, now. :) I could already decide how I was going to mix it while I was still listening to the stage 1 music, in terms of instruments/Kaoss/etc. Thanks for the well-wishing, and again for introducing me to Fire Shark. Holy shit, do want...

man, myspace doesn't do downloads anymore? Weird.

If you got a chance, I'd take some downloads of these tracks if you got the space. That's be coo.

~too lazy right now for conventional theft tactics

I'd like some:

Time Crisis 1 - all the tension main stage parts
Plok - anything
House of the Dead: Overkill - anything

Ketsui - the Doom fight (no remorse?)
R-Type Final - final stage (Fate)
Guardian Legend - 1st boss fight
Super Aleste/Space Megaforce - Stage 4 & boss
Castle Shikigami 1 - Final boss (Blue God Black Moon?)
Touhou #? - Owen Was Her
Gradius/Salamander - megamix of the boss fights
Gradius 2 - ending (farewell love)
Gradius III&IV - the techno FMV intro
Thunderforce V - The Justice Ray
Geometry Wars - anything
Gun.Smoke - anything
Blazing Star - Accomplish
Mushihamisama - Levi Sense (Boss)

Yeah, DS-10 is pretty cool. I can't do much with it because I'm incompetent, but I've been enjoying the fucked up noises.

Ooh. Yeah, sure. Pretty sure I'm going to hit the end of my "I really wanted to remix these for a while" list sometime soon, then it's all requests and any original tunes I can come up with.

Also, this is fucking weird. I know I chose to make my music downloadable, but no option shows up to do so, even though I'm logged in. Myspace is such a cheap whore sometimes...

Mediafire, got it. I knew to avoid Rapidshit because of the 10-download limit... Couldn't recall if Megaupload did the same...? but yeah, I'll go with Mediafire.

It's uploaded! Though this could possibly be used as humiliation in the future, since whenever I get better at anything, I hate to go back and look at my old work.

Oh, it'll happen. I love the game already and I haven't had a chance to play it yet. :/ I'm just fucking surprised that within my pile of Genesis shooters, I don't have it. Yet.

My next project, should it work out audibly, is going to be a medley of the 4th-stage music from Daioujou, Galuda, Ketsui, and Mushi... which is going to be interesting since Mushi will be 14 steps instead of the usual 16. Probably going to lower the BPM for that part, ever-so-slightly, so the 14-step segments last as long as the 16-step ones. Going to be a long-ass project, either way.

Also, if I can manage to take the vocals from "Proud of You" (R-Type Final ending theme), I kinda want to make a happy hardcore version. If anyone knows of a program that can separate instrumentals from vocals in a standard MP3, please let me know...

Audacity can do what you want. Basically you do a diff on the left and right channels and keep only the center (ie, parts of each channel that are the same). It's not a perfect technique, but there is really no perfect method for doing this. Depending on the track your results may vary, and it usually works better the other way around (keeping instruments and getting rid of vocals).

BTW, if you're doing some Toaplan stuff, give Hellfire's music a listen. Some brilliant stuff there.

Ah, thanks. I need to dabble more with Audacity... If I can just get a semi-decent-sounding rip of the vocals, I can do the rest in Adobe Premiere. (which I used as a sound-editor to piece together the segments of remixes I've made)

Also used it to insert recorded samples of my voice to make myself "sing" in the background of the "Adam" cover, in an attempt to go with the "chorus" theme of the original. Basically recorded several key notes then did the rest in Premiere. It was fun, but I think I made myself too quiet when altering the volume. ...Maybe it's for the best.

Will do. :) Currently I'm about 1/4 of the way through my CAVE Stage 4 medley. Opened up with DOJ's 4th stage, currently working on Galuda's, Ketsui is next...

I'll jump on the Mushi wagon and suggest the Hi-Score Name entry song or the stage 1 theme.

You just struck a special chord there. I fucking love Grind Stormer and its music. Personal favorite Genesis shmup. IMO it was the beginning of the bullet-hell genre, with its rising rank giving birth to horrific versions of the bullet patterns... Unless there's a bullet hell-ish game that precedes it that I don't know about.

I'll get on these suggestions soon. I've finished the Stage 4 medley, it's on my Myspace page, and I'll upload it to Mediafire later in case anyone wants it. ...It was much shorter than I expected. :(
