PS2 price cut ~ $99

Reuters is reporting the PS2 will be reduced to $99 in the United States as of April 1.

Sony states that software publishers still have plans to realease games for the next three years, with 80 titles due this year, and another 70-80 due in 2010.

The PS2 still sold 2.5 million units in the U.S. alone last year.
And will continue to be profitable for Sony at the $99 price point.

It is time for Sony to release more designer colors in the US.
At least bring the Ceramic White unit back, though I wouldn't mind a pink or powder blue console either

The PS2 controller has more buttons. An Xbox-to-PS2 adapter would be better for that.

These days I rarely think Sony execs are on the money, but Jack Tretton said this last year (according to Kotaku):

"If that $30 was the difference between buying a console and not buying a console, how many games are you going to sell to that person?"

I think that covers this nicely. Everyone who will actually buy more than two games a year has one already.

I'm happy with my pre-modded fat, white NTSC-J PS2. I recently replaced my modded PAL PS2 which I purchased in 2002 (before I was 18; had to get my mother to hire-purchase it for me) which was like, $500 or something absurd. I feel bad that I'm replacing it but I shouldn't have an affection towards hardware.

I also have a white, slim NTSC-J PS2 but I don't really like slimlines at all. I think placing discs in from the top is a bad idea, even moreso if you have it sideways.

This is at least sort of nice for people who want to replace a dying one. Shouldn't Sony know how to make a DVD drive that doesn't fall apart?

Basically what I was thinking. With so many great titles like God Hand, Nocturne, Yakuza 2 ...hell, now I'm putting in my time on the Samurai Shodown Anthology, the ps2 just can't stop getting love from me. Knowing cheap replacements are available is good news.

the last ps2 i bought also was just 65e, 100 for a new one is reasonable.

futureshop by me has brand new slim ps2's for $120 canadian($95 usd)

and i can get mint used ones for $60canadian from one of my games stores

april 1st is the start of the new financial year for a lot of companies, so i wouldn't imagine it's an april fools..

and while the ps2 is old news for most of us, it's only in the last couple of years that it's been rolled out in some of the developing countries, like india and the middle-east

so they will be in production for a little while yet
