Any vinyl collectors?

Post by tommyb »

Just wondering, I just found the SunnO)))/Boris album Altar at a record store in Cincinnati for 20 dollars, the 3xLP version. Only a thousand were made and its on eBay for over 100 dollars.

Just a cool feeling, haha. I have a few vinyl, but I think I'm gonna actually start collectiong now.

I have a few, but nothing too limited. Just the black metal and crust I listen to enough to warrant buying.

I started buying records a couple years back, then moved out and never bought myself a turntable for the apartment. I've still go them.

I made a habit of searching out video game music records, which are kind of cool but not all that good of a way to spend my money, in hindsight.

I have a handful of cool ones but I don't really go out of my way to buy them.

I have some, nothing special though, just random stuff that I like and found for cheap. The only thing of any interest I have is a Abe Duque album, mainly cool because it's hand printed.

Yeah I can't see myself going out of my way to start collecting, but the ones I have are pretty cool.

More of a "Hey theres a cool vinyl, I'm gonna buy it" type of thing.

I only really collect Melt Banana records, but I've slowed down a bit over the last few years. I'll never forget the excitement of holding their first 7" for the first time :)

My girlfriend has a fucking huge stack of very rare indie 7"'s, and my house mate has the best stoner/doom/sludge collection I have ever seen.

I'd like to see all of those collections, haha.

I have all of the Pulling Teeth "Witch's Sabbath" records, those are pretty rare, or are going to be, at least.

I don't have any 1337 r@rez but I prefer buying vinyl to CDs because of the bigger art

On albums with bad covers that doesn't matter so much though

I tend toward vinyl mostly for the sound quality, but I've got to admit I get a nifty little tingle when I pop open a 7" sleeve and see that it's in some cool color.

Lucky you... I've got a first print of sabbath, a couple sleep records, and graves at sea record but thats it for my doom/sludge stuff. I'd really like to get more old school heavy psyche, but the prices on those things make buying a cave pcb look cheap.

Quite a lot of vinyl in my collection. A load of man's ruin tenners and some sweet albums like blessed black wings double LP on blood red vinyl. Also paranoid gatefold.

I havent bought any vinyl in years but I have always hung onto my collection throughout the years... despite not even currently having a record player.

My collection consists mostly of older NY hardcore, metal, punk and movie sountracks.

Some of the crown gems being

- Agnostic Front; Victim in Pain (Rat Cage vers)
- Revelations 1-20 (all first presses)
- misc. Misfits 7 inches
- Minor Threat 12XU 12 inch
- Iron Maiden; Maiden Japan (signed)

@grovsnus.... those Mans Ruin fetch mega dollars these days, hang onto those. I sold Desert sessions vol.2 and Brant Bjork jalamanta not long ago and was shocked out how high they fetched.

Few hundred LPs in the house, with 100 or so 7" of old punk and about 100 or so rare jazz LP's. I use to collect Actuel Lps - about a 1/3 of the way there. I stopped buying when the 400+ rLP shelf I bought filled up and I just started stacking them on top. FYI - nothing compares to the sound quality of an LP played through a good record player.

I've got a pretty decent collection of vinyl, but I buy to listen and not to collect.

I'd say I have in the region of 600 albums, maybe a few more.

My crowning items are

Neil Young - Time Fades Away
Libertines - What A Waster
Anthony Braxton - Solo Improvisations Series F
The Fall - lots of various items, I'm especially fond of my original Grotesque (After the Gramme)

I buy albums in vinyl form as a preference so have a lot of new vinyl. Recently I picked up the newest Animal Collective album which is a real pleasure.

I've got a nice selection of avant noise and jazz stuff and I tend to collect curios when I see them. I love my Shit and Shine lp Cherry and highly rate my Eye Shaking Kingdom lp.

I listen to a lot of classical music on vinyl as it is quite easy and cheap to collect good stuff from charity shops. Recently I managed to get some Richard Strauss, Olivier Messiaen, Charles Ives, Stravinsky and Ravel for less than 50p.

Yeah, that's always fun. I have a urine colored Smell and Quim 7" and the frog colored Merzbow Frog LP.

Braxton is so good. I'd highly recommend picking up some of the work he did with Richard Teitelbaum, especially Time Zones and New York, Fall, 1974, which has to be my fav Braxton recording.

I would love the Braxton Mosaic set but unfortunately I am pretty poor at the moment!

I have a reasonable stash of his recordings and find infinite pleasure whenever I delve into his records, whether tribute/standard orientated, free improv or GTM onwards. I discovered him through the Iridium set and I'm still confounded by it, but enchanted in equal measure.

One of my favourite recirdings of last year was the Diamond Curtain Wall recording in Moscow (and the other dodgily aquired recordings of the group from this time), pointing me towards Mary Holvorsen who I would highly recommend.

I was just gonna ask how many of Merzbow's hundreds of albums are actually on vinyl?

I happen to love a lot of Merzbow's work, and would love to experience it on vinyl. Pulse Demon would be great, I think, as would Merzbird.

Edit: Speaking of Merzbow, does anyone know what this Mellow Peak business is? Apparently its Boris and Merzbow's new collab, but I cannot find any information on it short of it being mentioned in each's discography on Wikipedia.

I can only think of a few, though I am sure there are a bunch. I only have two, Frog and a split 10" he did with DJ Spooky.

Vinyl is a good format for noise. I only have a handful of records though. I've got two Killer Bug (Kazumoto Endo) 7" 's, a Masonna 7" picture disc, the Aube Quadrotation 7" set and the aforementioned Smell and Quim and Merzbow.

Masonna would be amazing.

Ugh, I didn't realize some of Boris's LPs go for so much on eBay. A lot of them are going for well over 180-200 dollars (Feedbacker, Amplifier Worship, Sun Baked Snow Cave, etc)

I think noise works well on vinyl beacuse of the increased sound range (compared to CD) as well as the limits that it places on the genre time wise. Very little noise can sustain my interest for 80 mins in one track but vinyl makes the artist break it down a little in my experience.

Just won Boris w/ Merzbow's "Walrus/Groon" split on eBay for 3.25. Can't beat it.

I've decided to start collecting drone/sludge, anything in that vain on vinyl.

I started collecting vinyl in high school, mostly art-rock stuff like Yes, ELP, etc. I branched out into other areas & now have a somewhat diverse collection. I also have a few newer vinyl releases, like a couple indie-rock 7", punk 7", and some current metal on vinyl. Matter of fact, I'm awaiting a metal album on vinyl, should arrive this week or next!
