PSP SNES Emulator
Old news, but I had a look at the thing yesterday, and I am very impressed so far.
Runs very slowly at the moment, but the games look amazing. I checked out loads of games, in particular: R-Type III is gorgeous (very easy due to speed though) and Super Aleste is almost perfect.
Just imagine all the shmups when the Megadrive, SNES and PCE emulators all run perfectly (although the PCE emulator is pretty damn close).

It does indeed look great running on that screen.
It's interesting to see how quickly new hardware can be exploited to run unsigned code.
Back on topic, I'm really looking forward to when this emulator can run games at full speed with sound. Chrono Trigger on the go will be amazing!
Also, all the genesis shmups will be sweet on the PSP screen - my Nomad runs all my Genny games, but the extreme blur gives me a headache!

Jesus...keep us up to date on this. I wanna play Fireshark on a portable!
EDIT: Hell, although the Raiden ports on the SNES and Genesis aren't perfect, they'd be AWESOME on a portable!

Geez, as fool-proof as Sony tried to make the PS2, they seem to have been pretty darn lazy with the PSP! It seems like I'm hearing new emulator stuff about it every friggin' day!judesalmon wrote:Old news, but I had a look at the thing yesterday, and I am very impressed so far.

And UMD's are supposed to be a totally new media format-right?

Exactly. I have no problems with using emulators to try out old games, but as far as using them to play these old games all the time...honestly people-a Genesis and an SNES can be had for pretty cheap!Bar81 wrote:NOMADCMoon wrote:Jesus...keep us up to date on this. Before this turns into some sort of flame war, I should mention that I do have a Nomad, and I hate the screen - it gives me headaches. Plus carrying around the 6 AA battery pack for three hours of gaming is miserable. I basically care about emulation on the PSP because it would be a nice solution to the problem of SNES/Genesis on the go.dave4shmups wrote:Exactly. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't you made it clear in the past that you don't care about portables dave? Some of us like to play games on the go, and I'm sure as hell not gonna cart around a SNES/TV everywhere I go. Plus some of us travel on business a fair amount.
Back on topic, this emulator should end up making many people quite happy. Like I mentioned before, I can't wait to play all my games on there, with a nice, bright screen. And actually, I'm interested in seeing what the emulator authors do with the rest of the huge screen, since there'll be lots left over due to the aspect ratio of the PSPs screen. I'm guessing a fps display, maybe a clock, total play time, battery life, etc. could be shown on the rest of the screen.
Just thought I'd quote for truth. The Nomad was a nice idea but jesus was it murder on the eyes and on the batteries.marcus12024 wrote:Before this turns into some sort of flame war, I should mention that I do have a Nomad, and I hate the screen - it gives me headaches. the emus on the PSP is actually the biggest pro for me.. its a sleek console witha a sweet screen and if im able to play all my retro games on it (on the fly aswell) i'll defienetly buy one, for these reasons it'll also be the first handheld i'll ever buy.. i'm not gonna stop collecting SNES or MD games anyways... nothing beats an original!

Hey, no harm done I hope, I don't want this to turn into a flame war either. I didn't know the Nomad's screen was so bad; and I do realize that people want to play old games like this on the go.marcus12024 wrote:Before this turns into some sort of flame war, I should mention that I do have a Nomad, and I hate the screen - it gives me headaches. But like I said before, it just amazes me that you can do this so easily on the PSP.

Cool man, it's all good. And yeah, the Nomad's screen is somewhat decent, until there's any sort of motion. For example, Sonic. The game looks great, but once you start running, it's just a crazy blur. Instant headache.Hey, no harm done I hope, I don't want this to turn into a flame war either. And I'm not sure if this was easy to get up and running on the PSP, or if the hardware gurus out there are just getting smarter/more experienced

Well, apparently Sony's signature isn't required to run applications on the Japanese v1.0 firmware (which is what all these emulators are running on) but this was fixed for the v1.5 in the US launch systems. Although I do agree that the emulation scene at least for v1.0 is progressing at a breakneck speed.
And up until a few months ago, I thought that the DS would have the upper hand given all the GBA emulation that happened, but it's barely crawling along at a snail's pace. I'm glad that I have both of those handhelds.

With the recent loss of my SNES, you guys think I'd jump all over this like a sex addict on a cheap hooker. But, I'm not ready to blow $200+ on a handheld quite yet. Plus, I'll wait for the emulators to be at least 99.9%accurate.
Sure, there's some SNES on the GBA, but they feel watered down in terms of graphics and sound compared to the SNES verison. Plus, two buttons are missing.

Bleh, I wouldn't count on the DS for emulators. Even if they get an SNES or Genesis one to run at full speed, you've still got the low resolution so you're either stuck playing in some kind of a scaled mode (which is kinda annoying) or you're stuck with looking at a zoomed in portion of the screen.iatneH wrote:Well, apparently Sony's signature isn't required to run applications on the Japanese v1.0 firmware (which is what all these emulators are running on) but this was fixed for the v1.5 in the US launch systems. I think the DS homebrew scene is more interested in making it do PDA-like stuff. A Windows clone just came out for the DS . woohoo!

I'm still wondering what the big deal is with resloution. Yeah, on the big screen it matters (though not nearly enough to keep me from using the GB Player), but on a small screen it's not much of a problem. Very few games are pixelated and most games have a good amount of the screen showing. Yeah, the sound isn't as good as SNES, but for the most part, it's far from crap. Seriously, what are you expecting? The good SNES to GBA ports (Donkey Kong Country and Earthworm Jim don't count) look as good as the SNES version and have good sound.FatCobra wrote:With the recent loss of my SNES, you guys think I'd jump all over this like a sex addict on a cheap hooker. Anyway, I really not too excited about the PSP being able to play SNES games. I rather play the real games than play the roms.
Guys, I don't think the Nomad's screen is that bad, though I agree with the battery issue - it sucks!
Here's a partial solution: bring the Nomad on the plane for your 3 hour flight and play on batteries. Buy a Nomad or Genesis 2 AC adapter & Genesis 2 (or Nomad) AV cable to hook up to the TV in the hotel room because the Nomad allows you to do that. The only caveat I have for you is that Lightening Force (aka TF4) doesn't work well on the Nomad (or at least it doesn't work well on mine), and I have problems using a Game Genie on mine.

Yeah, I was tired with all the silly peoples and their "i wanna play chorno trigger n spermario rpg on my psp!"8 1/2 wrote:Screw SNES. I want Genesis. Musha, Elemental Master, Thunderforce 3&4, Streets of Rage series... the list of games that would make perfect portable games is too long to even start on.
Come on you code-cracking geniuses! Destroy 1.5!
There isn't really much I want to play on SNES, maybe Wild Guns and Cybernator.
There actually are already early releases of two different Megadrive emulators for PSP, I believe, and NeoGeoCD emulation is coming along nicely so by the time 1.5 is cracked expect to be able to get Pulstar, Last Resort, Viewpoint and the first two Slugs on the go! TurboGrafx-16 is almost near-perfect from what I've heard which is awesome too.
It is processing so fast cause sonys firmware 1.0 was/is an open book.iatneH wrote:Well, apparently Sony's signature isn't required to run applications on the Japanese v1.0 firmware (which is what all these emulators are running on) but this was fixed for the v1.5 in the US launch systems. There was no time-consuming hacking and cracking for the hackers because there was almost no need for hacking.Sony saw that and updated to 1.5firmware which is a beast to hack.....I guess you won't be able to play any emus on your western PSP in the next 2-3months(or even longer).
DS is even worse cause getting unsigned homebrews to work needs some more things(PassMe+flash card or Flashme+WifiMe/Flash Card).
anyways...there might be some straight ports of some emus for PSP but what homebrewers have done for DS so far is more than impressive(3 diff. OS, MOD Player,Multiboot programms, an awesome paint-app[Darkstar], WifiMe, hacked and updated firmware aka FlashMe, dozens of games like a perfect Donkey Konga port and Duck Hunt....both with stylus controls;hell even a shmup[musk] is avaible).

You can re-size the picture in the PCE emulator, so it will fill the whole screen, still looks okay, so hopefully that will be done with the SNES emulator.
I like the idea of playing SNES games on the PSP for the mobility and the quality - there is no way you can get SNES games looking that good on a TV.

If at home I would play SNES games on my SNES, but when I'm not, it's nice to have a big selection of games on my PSP. Also, making some of the rarer games available to people who don't want to spend loads on SNES games is a good thing.
