Space Invaders Extreme 2?
Apparently P-A has a listing for this (possible) DS game, and a release date of March 26 - obviously we'll have to wait for something more official before getting too excited, but I figured this was still worth posting.
Hopefully, if this is real, it'll also return to the PSP...

They really are cashing in on this Space Invaders revival they've started now. Though if it's as good as Space Invaders Extreme, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. One of the most addicting games of 2008.

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a third game for the paddle controller. And yeah, both games are different enough to justify the purchase at that price, provided you like the game.honorless wrote:Here's hoping SIE2 works with the paddle as well; that way I'll feel more motivated to invest in one.
Slightly OT, but both versions are now $9.99 at GS. No better time to buy the one you passed up the first time -- I find them different enough for it to be worth owning both.
I disagree. The DS one feels better despite both screens (which they thankfully leave for boss encounters). Everything in the PSP version feels a bit squished, not to mention leaving out the awsome music and online.professor ganson wrote:I'm not so sure. I have both versions and I prefer the PSP version in spite of the fact that the DS one is compatible with the dial contoller. I love those controls, but the PSP version looks better and is easier on the eyes.
Got the DS version, btw. Hope this new one is similarly budget priced.

And will Space Invaders Extreme 2 get a localized USA port as well? If not, it'll have to be imported. You can be sure that NCSX and other USA-based mail-order video game importers will stock up on the Japanese version of SIE-2 game. ^_~
Glad to have gotten a DS paddle controller to play the 1st SIE version...I'm still amazed at how Taito was able to shrink down the paddle controller and still retain that weighted flywheel found on the full-sized arcade cabinet rotary knob spinner setups. ^_~
Tis a shame that the DS paddle controller wasn't officially released for the USA market...it would've sold quite well. With the upcoming USA version of DSi variant handheld, said removal of GBA cart slot means that it is best to buy a DSlite now before it does get recalled by Nintendo of America themselves.

Are you sure you can't turn off the announcer? From the demo, that was the only thing that annoyed me. No sale then I'm afraid.Vincent Draconis wrote:Played it. The background on the bottom screen actually manages to distract me this time, but only on the first stage. And the new announcer needs to go (no, you can't turn him off).

Stage 5-C of SIE1 is thoroughly kicking my ass, so I'm skipping over to the sequel for the time being. I'm starting to warm up to it. What I really like is how the overall flow of the game has been streamlined. Round Starts now take place during stages on the top screen.
At first, I wasn't really a fan of the Bingo Fever mechanic, which is pretty much required to gain high ranks on stages. Playing the game some more, it's starting to grow on me. It's reminiscent of the tricks in older arcade games that take a lot of work to pull off, but rewarded you with a big payoff.
And R-Typer, I'm very sure you can't turn off the announcer; believe me, I looked for an option.
Top Screen shows a 3x3 grid of colored boxes with inner boxes. To get a Bingo Fever, you must connect three of these boxes horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. You light up these boxes by destroying two sets of four enemies of the appropriate color (outer = 1st set, inner = 2nd set), destroying the Round Start UFO, and completing the round. "BINGO CHANCE" will flash on the screen to let you know you're close.
The Bingo Challenge itself involves destroying a giant invader made of small and large bricks on the top screen. Nothing too difficult, especially not with the Bomb powerup.
Bingo Fever has the same gold, item-dropping aliens on the bottom screen; top screen has gold UFOs that do the same, and pink UFOs on the top screen that drop pink items worth more points. Strategy? Shoot and collect. That's about it.
EDIT - Some other related notes I'll store here.
Unused lighted squares will carry over between stages.
Two Lines Fever:
If a Bingo Challenge would result in two lines being connected after completion, it becomes a Two Lines Challenge. This challenge requires you to destroy an giant invader made entirely of small blocks while other large invaders fly under it to block your shots. Hope you have a powerup handy.
Initiating a Two Lines Fever and grabbing the treasure trove of falling gold & pink items essentially guarantees you an S Rank for a stage, so it's worth all the effort.
While I'm here, I might as well ask: Is it really worth buying a DS Paddle Controller (currently in-stock at NCSX) for both SIE games and Arkanoid DS?

There's no explanation about it here, so I'll throw a short one up.Jockel wrote:bingo fever

I quite like this sequel so far. I never really liked the first game because it felt too much like a homebrew title, the background graphics and music annoyed me. Also I disliked the loading of bonus rounds during the game.
Also call me crazy, but I just love retarded over the top announcers in games, they make me laugh with their nonsensical broken English.

I've heard the paddle is great, but is murder on your battery.Vincent Draconis wrote:While I'm here, I might as well ask: Is it really worth investing in a DS Paddle for both SIE games and Arkanoid DS?

The 411 on the Taito Paddle controller for the NDS...
For Vincent Draconis,
Yes, I've got one of those cool Taito NDS Paddle controllers. Considering Taito's rich arcade heritage, how they managed to replicate the full-sized arcade rotary knob spinner with proper weighted flywheel for the NDS is spot on. You can spin the NDS paddle controller hard and it'll spin for a long time before slowly coming to a complete stop. If you do use it on an NDSlite variant, it'll stick out a tad bit but that really doesn't compromise gameplay one bit. If you do have the original NDS, then it'll fit in all the way perfectly like a well broken baseball glove fits in your hand. ^_~
By using a paddle controller, it does give the player an edge with it's analog to digital interface...very quick and silky smooth responsiveness compared to just using the NDS' digital-based d-pad setup. ^_~
If your NDS' battery is fairly new, then you have no worries about playing some lengthy sessions with both SIE-1 and SIE-2 with the paddle controller setup.
It is recommended to use the Taito paddle controller if you want to play better & score better on the NDS Arkanoid port.

According to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xb ... g_releases
SIE is coming to XB Live Arcade?
This also suggests Jeff Minter is involved:

This true or just BS?

NICE MOVES, MAVERICK!MathU wrote:I've heard conflicting reports that you can and can't turn the announcer off. Are you sure you can't?
I picked up the "evaluation edition" from my good friend The Internet, and I must say, it's a marvelous improvement over the shittastic nature of the first Space Invaders Extreme game. Got rid of a lot of gimmicky bullshit, made the boss fights more epic, and the saucer boss' bouncy-shots are actually AVOIDABLE now. If it's released stateside it's a definite buy for me, this "evaluation edition" is sort of buggy; sometimes freezes after a stage ends.
