I'd like to warn that Stage 4 will most likely be the first time in a Gradius game that you DO NOT want to be using one button for missile and shot.

(Okay, 2nd, for those who haven't wiped away horrible horrible memories of Gradius III AC stage 7.)

I myself have, on my Classic Controller, rapid shot mapped to B and X, missile to Y, and powerup to A.

Yeah, it's annoying that. The only reason why that is the default is so people can play using just the WiiMote.

Well, I finally beat Gradius Rebirth with an abysmal score of 412,000! By the time I beat it and got to the loop, I hadn't yet beaten my old high score. I only really cared about getting a 1CC, so I'm happy. This marks my 7th shmup ever that I've 1CCed and the 2nd easiest (behind Monkey King for the Wii that I beat easily last month).

Does anyone actually use the bonus stages? I tried them for a while, but it seems to me that you can get much better scores by continuing through the rest of the normal levels.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I realized this too, so I stopped using the bonus stages.
I had an awesome run today as well, no-miss up to 3-4, and I pretty much lost everything in the goddamn intermission BEFORE the stage itself!

Ah well. 1st place with something like 1.18mil.

You should. You've been knocked down to somewhere between 6th and 8th.

Okay, I'm staring to feel bad for Konami & M2. If I can place 15th on a shmup with a leader board, then this game must not be selling well at all.

As with most WiiWare online score boards, it's a complete waste of space. Nintendo are completely retarded when it comes to online functionality.

I honestly don't think so. I haven't looked lately, but you'd think we'd recognize more names than me and Khoa in the US West. I recognize Garm from other games, but dunno who he is.

You're New York, so I assume we'd be on the same board as Khoa is north of us.

Star Soldier R divided US into 4 regions by corner.

Well I'm at .9 million now, but I don't have scoreboard access at the moment. Rest assured, I will catch up to you guys.

There are two known bonus stages. One in 1-4, and another in 2-2.
1-4's bonus stage should be located inside the skull on the ground on the right of two pillars (one long, one short), and 2-2's is some narrow passageway near the ceiling.

1-2's bonus stage is gotten to by flying up into that first pit in the ceiling around the middle of the stage.

Purchased this shmup this week finally. Took my time due to being hesitant about huge expected downgrade compared to Gradius V and Gaiden. Pleasantly surprised by how charming the throwback style of it is. Stage 2 is almost C64-esque in its old skoolness. Gameplay seems more fun than I remember the older Gradius games being. :P Nice audio too. And nice price tag... Easy to recommend to retro shmup fans.

Is it just the JPN version that's been updated?

What exactly is in the update? And how many years before US players get it?

I wonder whether we just delete & re-download the game to get the new version, if/when it's available on our regional Wii Shop, since the Wii doesn't have support for patches afaik.

I think most updates are done via re-download if I'm not mistaken. In anycase, the Japanese site just tells you to look up Gradius Rebirth in the WiiWare section and download the update if it applies.
