RE4 has the same controls pretty much, except a different camera angle and aiming scheme, but yeah.

I personally don't mind the controls in the previous RE's . . don't take much to get used to.

Thats pretty impressive, but thats speed running it. I just felt it had too much filler in it playing it normally.

RE4 wasn't too long.

It still has great atmosphere throughout its length (the quiet moments remind me of the N64 Castlevanias, but in a creepy good way), and it doesn't just rely on cutscenes and crazy camera angles.

See, as good as the previous games are, they don't really have good gameplay due to the worst control scheme tolerated in the business. It seems more or less a necessity, although I point out that Dino Crisis let you actually move about during fighting.

RE4 doesn't either, but it makes up for that with the context-sensitive stuff and quick time events - which may admittedly prove far too shallow a system for gamers with quick reflexes), and being able to target more intelligently than "footshot / skyshot / center of the groin" adds a huge dimension to the series. Capcom thought Umbrella Chronicles could rely on the shooting alone, and apparently some people bought it, after all.

Funniest thing was when Crapcom ported to the PS2 and gave the characters hilariously ugly and out of place outfits, and also gave the Thompson a (not-so-round) drum magazine despite the PS2 already choking on the visuals.

I agree!

It takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it it's great fun. I like the pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angels as well, they add a lot of atmosphere. Especially when you enter a room, hear the sound of a zombie but is unable to see it because of the angels. My personal favorite is the GC remake of the first game, it's sad that capcom excluded the resurrecting zombies in the later games.

I don't hate traditional RE controls, just like RE4 style better because it allows for more precision shooting. RE3 for example, doesn't always target what I want to shoot and it has happened to me many times that I'm trying to shoot a exploding object but the game decides to shoot the enemy next to it despite me pressing the correct targeting button. Being able to choose exactly what I want to shoot is a big improvement over pointing in the general direction of something and hope you'll hit it.

And let's not get into the camera angles. It's very frustrating when enemies hide between the border of screens and you take damage because you can't see them.

Never got used to the controls, even after the many hours sunk in.

For good (read flawless) 3rd person fixed camera controls, see Eternal Darkness. In fact, ED > RE1/2/3/CV. Maybe even better than RE4 - I'd have to go back and play them both again thoroughly to decide.

See, this is why most RE games have that system. It was a calculated tradeoff.

But we all know dang well there's a reason why this system isn't popular in fully 3D rendered games. Why? 'cuz it's silly to hamstring the player with weird and limited controls for no reason.

RE4 is the only one I played and I liked it quite a bit, being pretty much not into 3D games at all.

The only thing that always annoyed me is that often I had to wait for shotdown enmies to get up again to finish them off. I really missed something like the "step on their necks"-finishing move from Silent Hill.

RE5 is officially the most retarded game ever.

I spent the best part of an hour shooting this boss this morning (its in chapter 5 I think, the Uoroboro thing). Acid rounds, flame rounds, magnum bullets, 150 machine gun rounds, flame throwing, grenade launching and the fucking asshole wouldn't die. So I die a few times in the process. Buy a rocket launcher and its one hit . Its just so retarded.

I read the gamefaq and it said it doesn't like fire. This bastard laughs and breathes in fire and still knocks half your health from the other side of the room.

The inventory as you all know is in realtime, so you've got a can of health in your inventory, but by the time you try to use it about 8 tentacles are sucking at your arteries. Not to mention Sheva who in narrow corridors will happily waste rounds and rounds of ammo shooting you in the back

So you've got boss right, its weak spots are all there to see. Yet with a shotgun I still need precision accuracy at 5 feet range? There is this one stage where there are 25 lickers and Sheva has to go off on her own. Armed with just a pistol and bad language she trundles straight into the lair. If I go near the bastards the extra length porno tongue comes out 20 feet and strangles me to death.

Then in the next bit, you have to waste time avoiding Wesker, only to have to fight Evil Jill afterwards, who will happily kick the living shit out of you when you go near her. If your lucky you can start the 20 minute track and field hold pressing XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX only for Sheva to watch in awe how strong you are. "Get the fucking bitch you whore".

I swear, this game is the most retarded game ever. Some people say its easy, well it is if you just keep selling things for rocket launchers. But seriously, I know a friend who can't do track and field very well to begin with. If he likes RE games why does he have to suffer because of a stupid track and field event which should have nothing to do with adventure games?

Ok rant over. Its a nice game, it has its shortcomings though and some places are beyond hard for me. I just don't have the patience for all these sequence bosses.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

What's stopping you from shooting them when they're down?

Eh, I found it pretty obvious that youre supposed to burn it after you take out the weakpoints, as after that it gets stunned for quite a bit and well, looks weak. But yeah, I was a bit disappointed that the bosses were essentially just about figuring out how to beat them, which is usually ridiculously obvious and after you figure them out youll beat them in a few seconds on the harder difficulties. I only played the first two levels with the AI though. Didnt see the point in doing it with the AI if I have XBL and its more fun with other people anyway.

Use the flamethrower on it to stun it while your partner shoots the now-exposed weak points. The game even mentions the flamethrower shortly after the fight begins and you just plonk it back to recharge. All the boss fights from here on in are gimmicky, though.

Is it necessary to save ammo, anyways? I wouldn't use the knife on anything but Krauser and at the very beginning.

The game regulates drops from enemies, once you know it's going to give you handgun ammo the moment you're low on handgun ammo, you don't really worry about it anymore. It's worth saving ammo on your exotic weapons, though.

It depends on the skill level, professional mode from scratch can be tricky as the ganados take alot more shots to kill, you find yourself really going for the legs and head out of necessity.

I just finished playing CVX again and god it is just as awful as I remembered it. I hate you guys for making me give this game another go. Ugh. Maybe I should play RE4 or RE3 again to wash out the bad taste.

There were fun parts in Code: Veronica, it's just that the game was padded with way too much backtracking.

Anyone who doesn't like the series' rotation controls might want to try the N64 port of RE2. It the only Resident Evil game were you can... immediately move in the direction you point the stick! (gasp!)

Speaking of ports, I like how the PC version of RE3 lets the player skip the door animations. The first time I tried it, I walked through the same door several times, just to skip it.
