R-Type 2 in Mame (rtype2.zip) is noticeably different from the game featured in the R-Types collection. It also seems that Dimensions is based off that version. However, the vids I've found so far online point to, what I'm assuming would be, rtype2j being the de facto version. Enemies from behind and tougher bosses increase the difficulty level in an already difficult game. What is considered the real game around these parts?
From what I can tell, however, R-Type 1 is unchanged from any version I've played.
What rev. is R-Types (PS1) based on?

Those weren't emulations, I remember Edge writing at times that Irem rewrote portions of the code to recreate them at best on PS. (thankfully).Damocles wrote:R-Type 2 in Mame (rtype2.zip) is noticeably different from the game featured in the R-Types collection.

I'm sorry, but do you mean that the R-Type 2 in Dimensions is based on rtype2.zip, or that it's based on the R-Types version?Damocles wrote:R-Type 2 in Mame (rtype2.zip) is noticeably different from the game featured in the R-Types collection. Sorry, that was ambiguous. R-Type 2 in Dimensions is closest to the rtype2.zip romset.Mortificator wrote:I'm sorry, but do you mean that the R-Type 2 in Dimensions is based on rtype2.zip, or that it's based on the R-Types version?Damocles wrote:R-Type 2 in Mame (rtype2.zip) is noticeably different from the game featured in the R-Types collection. Re: What rev. is R-Types (PS1) based on?
Thanks for the clarification. While we're talking about set differences, I've noticed that the US version of the original game (rtypeu.zip) is slightly tougher than the Japanese (rtypej.zip, previously named rtype.zip in 0.111 and earlier); there's one less POW Armor in stage 4, for example.
I should check and see if they changed the speed for R-Types. I remember Ceph posting that the PAL version was better because the arcade version ran at (checks) 55.017606 Hz.Turrican wrote:Those weren't emulations, I remember Edge writing at times that Irem rewrote portions of the code to recreate them at best on PS.
