Battle Garegga 1 life?
Battle Garegga 1 life?
Wikipedia states:
"though it is possible to finish the game in one life given an intricate knowledge of the game's rank system and an ultra-prudent playstyle."
Is this bull? I didn't ever hear of anyone having done the game on a life?

KET made a video of no missing the game with the worst ship (grasshopper). In another video he got the 1cc without ever collecting an option item, crazy stuff!

B.oth using variants of the Wild Snail. First one is a No Option, by KET; the second is by MOG-y.k, and is a No Miss.
You can find these replays on his YouTube account, as well as the movies section of his Garegga Laboratory site.
This isn't the first time this question has popped up on this forum, by the way. No Miss and No Option play generally requires very precise play. KET normally goes through large sections of the game without firing, and speedkills many bosses.

I could upload the no-miss somewhere if anyone wants. Or you could just download them here and here I guess. In addition to the links Icarus posted, KET also has more stuff up on his zoome page. As an aside, there are some awesome youtube-ish comments on his youtube vids.
Now I have a question that is more interesting than a no miss. Does somebody know if KET or anyone has tried going for maximum number of ships upon clearing? This is sort of a hybrid between playing for score and playing for no miss, but much different from either. I wonder how many people could reach in this category.

Oh wow, I wonder why there's a cap in the first place. Anyway it makes sense, that's why top superplays only get up to 5 for Black Heart mk2. Certainly nothing I would ever run into.
Someone could patch the game to remove the cap, but this requirement makes it extremely unlikely anyone has ever tried this.

That would be interesting to see if a rom upgrade to remove that particular "maximum 5 lives" on an Garegga PCB. Would just be a matter of looking for the code to change it, right? ^_~Enhasa wrote:Oh wow, I wonder why there's a cap in the first place. Somebody should e-mail Yagawa about this...I'd like to hear what he'd have to say on his Garegga PCB creation if he would be interested in creating a new Garegga rom upgrade. ^_~Dave_K. wrote:Wouldn't it be cool if getting the 6th extend would roll you over to 2 with inifinite lives (ala pink sweets) and max rank. Would open this game up to new scores and strategies. I swear Yagwa is an innovative genius.
Upon watching a skilled player whiz through a single 1CC session of Garegga on the Gamest Video Vol. 27 of Battle Garegga VHS tape superplay, he kills himself on purpose because of the 5th extend max issue. I see the reasoning/logic behind all of this particular Garegga superplay. ^_~

Somehow I doubt it. The rank system and the extend stock are interlinked, and to be able to modify one, you'd have to modify the other. And as far as I know, there is no easy way of reprogramming the rank system outside of using a non-Japanese region Garegga PCB.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:That would be interesting to see if a rom upgrade to remove that particular "maximum 5 lives" on an Garegga PCB. Pink Sweets is a bit of an interesting anomaly. Almost all of the Garegga template games feature an extend cap at around five, aside from Batrider that is capped at three - Garegga, Ibara, MMP, Bakraid all have a five lives cap - yet Pink Sweets seems to activate Multiply Mode once you exceed five lives.Dave_K. wrote:Wouldn't it be cool if getting the 6th extend would roll you over to 2 with inifinite lives (ala pink sweets) and max rank. Whether or not this is a glitch or an actual feature is open to interpretation.

'Nother noob question here, but these names all you guys are tossin' around, like Yagawa and IKD, are these guys who made cheats for the games or people who actually made them?
Do you guys actually know the people who made these games?

You'd be amazed at how many bullets you can dodge by simply standing still
Yes, apparently the May 2006 revision removed it. It was released 1 month after the initial version, and made to appease Arcade ops who complained this infinite lives feature was causing them to lose money. This version was short-lived and is basically impossible to find today. You can think of it as somewhat like a ver 1.5, as it changed a core feature of the game.Icarus wrote:One of the (many) fixes actually removed it, correct?EOJ wrote:Not really. It's clear it's a feature as the bug-fixed ROM still has it. CAVE has also stated it's not a bug.
Pretty odd thing to do to the game, if it was an intended feature.
The latest revision, and the only one you can get from CAVE if you send in your PS PCB to be fixed, fixes all the bugs (character lines, freezes, etc) but the infinite lives are still in there. Hence, it's not a bug. And come on, do you really think Yagawa would make a such a silly programming mistake in the lives tally, causing the game to unintentionally shift into a mode in the dip switches called "multiply"?

I love it. "Cave, people are completing the game far too easily. Make it harder, please."EOJ wrote:Yes, apparently the May 2006 revision removed it, released 1 month after the initial version, due to complaints from Arcade ops that this infinite lives feature was causing them to lose money.
You're an arcade operator IN JAPAN. People are probably clearing arcade games in their sleep. :p

The problem wasn't that they were completing it too easily, it was that they were sitting on the cab for 60-80minutes (or over 2 hours in Extended mode!) for 100 yen. The May 2006 revision was only given to the ops who complained about this (which is why it is so rare today). Those who never complained to Cave were never told it existed.
If you complain today, nearly 3 years after the game's release, Cave will update the ROM (for a fee), but they won't give you the revision with the infinite lives removed, so it seems they don't really want that version out there anymore.

IKD is Tsuneki Ikeda, a head programmer at Cave, responsible for some of the fun mechanics and shit that make Cave awesome.the black_7 wrote:Yagawa and IKD, are these guys who made cheats for the games or people who actually made them?
Yagawa was a developer at Raizing, working on such revered games as Battle Garegga and Armed Police Batrider. He was later hired by Cave and made some games with Raizing playstyle, like Ibara and Pink Sweets. (Yagawa actually worked on Recca, hence the elements incorporated into PS)
I don't think we have personal contact with them, but we know who they are, and IKD shows up at a lot of Cave events.
Holy shit, you weren't joking. Thank god YT allows comment blocking now.Enhasa wrote:As an aside, there are some awesome youtube-ish comments on his youtube vids.
