PS2 pal/ntsc question

Post by petieken »

Hi,
I was wondering, if I put a Jap game in my PAL PS2 does the console automatically switch to 60hz or is it stuck to 50hz? I have a few Jap PS2 games (non shmups) but I have nothing to compare it to so I don't know if they're playing at 50 or 60hz. :?

bye

If you put a JAP PS2-game in a PAL PS2-console the game doesn't play at all ;)

If your PS2 is chipped, the game might ask you what mode you prefer. Or it will just run NTSC I think.

Sorry I forgot to mention, there's a modchip in there :)

When I put a Jap game in it just plays without asking anything... Thats why I was wondering if it plays PAL or NTSC?

For petieken,

What kind of modchip does your Pal version PS2 console have btw?

Since the Japanese PS2 games run in NTSC format, it be assumed that your console would run them in NTSC format - 60 frames-per-second framerate.

It's possible to buy a dedicated Japanese PS2 console for about $125.00 to $150.00 USD in used condition and no need to worry about modchips or even if it plays in PAL or NTSC format since it's already in NTSC format to begin with. ^_~

It's a matrix infinity chip. I installed it a few years ago to play imports and watch dvd's in RGB.

I used to have a USA region PS2 console with a DMS version 1.0 modchip that allowed you to play those cool Japanese PS2 games + it removed the dreaded "green screen" when playing movies in Japanese Scart mode with an XRGB-2 setup. It went on the fritz one day.

Nowdays, I just use a dedicated Japanese PS2 15000 series console to play the import games properly without the need for a modchip. The only catch is that the green screen results if I were to use my XRGB-2 when using Japanese Scart cable and watching DVDs in RGB mode. I do recall that if you use an optional Japanese region PS2 DVD Region X boot disc + required dongle memory card key, it will make the green screen issue go away. ^_~

ok, I just found out it runs at 60 hz. I forced my tv to PAL and all NTSC games are b/w with blurry lines, when forced to NTSC it's in color without those blurry lines.
The chip can force different color systems too PAL, NTSC, PAL60 & VGA (I just found the manual of that chip again)
I'll try that VGA setting sometime on my pc monitor. I'm curious to see the result of that. :)

For me the DVDs are still displayed in green when output through RGB. So I have to toggle a switch on the SCART cable to see colors, but its not RGB anymore, right ? ...

I don't know exactly but that switch is probably to switch between RGB and Composite or S-Video. My chip removes the green screen and I'm using an official sony scart cable.

what happens if you put the PS2 in 480p mode with that chip? Will you get VGA without sync on green?

to use the the VGA mode you need to have the PS2 connected to a VGA box...otherwise it wont work...

if you try and select this option it comes up with a prompt warning of this

I tried it today with a PS3 VGA cable and it doesn't seem to work... Or maybe I need to set the console to YPbPr like I have to do with the PS3, I'll try it later.

the ps2 cannot output VGA on its own...you need a VGA box...this setting just optimizes the output for VGA res
