We didn't get Fox where I grew up, I've seen all of like three episodes of this show

What should I begin with? Specific episodes wise

Pretty much every season up until maybe 8? I forget exactly when it got crappy, I think it was around there.

There are only a handful of episodes worth watching from the first two seasons, like:
Season 2 Episode 3 "Treehouse of Horror" (started the tradition of halloween episodes consisting of three viginettes)
S2E12 "The Way we Was" (first flashback episode, I think)

Season 3 through 5 is when the show was starting to get a larger proportion of funny episodes. Some of my favorites are:
S3E17 "Homer at the Bat"
S3E18 "Separate Vocations"
S3E12 "Marge vs. the Monorail"
S4E14 "Brother from the Same Planet"
S5E2 "Cape Feare"
S5E13 "Homer and Apu"
S5E15 "Deep Space Homer"
S5E16 "Homer Loves Flanders"
S5E19 "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song"
S5E20 "The Boy Who Knew Too Much"

Season 6 through most of season 9 were probably the peak, where I'd have to name a few episodes I didn't like, instead of picking out ones I did.

After that, the show started to get lame, though there were still some good episodes in there. By season 14 or so I'd stopped watching entirely. I don't know if they ever picked themselves out of the gutter.

Season 1 usually doesn't get any credit, but I really like The Call of the Simpsons. Others: Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington, Homer Badman.

The huge drop in quality occured in season 11, although that season also has at least one really good episode ("Behind the laughter")

Everything from season 2 - 10 is pretty much pure gold.

I used to watch the show religiously (even the daily syndicated reruns), and this sounds about right. Maybe more like 3 to 9 though, I can't remember exactly when it started to suck. At some point in the late 90's or early 00's when they had guest stars all the time, ugh, there was a definite downturn there.

The good years were really, really great, though. It's kind of sad how 10 years of mediocrity (or worse) have tarnished the show's reputation. I keep watching it out of habit, though. I watched so many episodes growing up that I just can't bring myself to stop watching it even though I know it will probably suck. The last few years were better than the early 00's, but not by much.

I thought 2 through 9 were all really great.

After that, forget it. Season one was....odd. It didn't find it's footing until season two.

I watched the show religiously - it was probably the most personally significant piece of pop-culture I took in during my childhood in the 90's. Not long ago, I watched all the episodes in the order they were made up until season 10. To me, the lack of subtle wit and the over-the-top plots and gags which killed the show started coming around in season 9. I'd say seasons 5, 6 and 7 were the peak, with 4 and 8 being damned good as well.

On a sidenote, i find it hard to pick a particular very good episode.
I think it's the charakters that grow on you, that make the show special.
You gotta appreciate all the love the sidecharacters are getting.
There's Eleanor Abernathy (the cat-lady), Fat Tony, Cletus Spuckler (the white trash guy with 39 children), Gil Gunderson who is always broke, the list goes on and on and on.
Almost every person you see in the simpsons has it's own backstory, and that's what i really love about the series.

Lisa's Rival (season six, episode 105)
Boy-Scoutz N' The Hood (season 5, episode 89)
Rosebud (season 5, episode 85)
Lisa the Vegetarian - (season 7, episode 133)

These are a few of my favorites off the top of my head.

Edit: Season's 5, 6 and 7 were probably when the show was at its best with 6 being my personal favorite.

Watch all seasons starting from #1 until you notice them go bad. I stopped watching by season 15 I think, but they got crappy way before that season... :(

Why so much hate for the later seasons?
I mean sure, it sucked when it got preachy, but i found e.g. Season 17 to be pretty good.

I think all seasons are good, except for the first one. Well, I haven't seen many of the later seasons... I've seen 1-11. I actually have downlo...ehrm.. borrowed some DVD's from a friend *wink*... season 12-20, and I'm slowly going through them.

Some episodes are great, some are not :P

It's like everything it has it's good days, it has it's bad days.

I for one still watch every new episode that airs & find myself laughing at something in all of them.

Watched the St Patricks Day episode yesterday & thought some of it was classic (Q-Bert bit mainly) but some not so.

It's just one of those things when somehing has run as long as this has then they are bound to just re-tread the same ground a few times & they cant all be pure gold.

My best episodes are anything with Sideshow Bob in especially the Cape Fear rip-off thats just stunningly brilliant sart to finish.

Anyway it's all about American Dad for comedy Genius these days...Stan is a legend Homer could only aspire to be :)

I don't really HATE the later seasons. There are definitely good episodes no denying that, but the last seasons I watched are too much focused on Homer imho.
Soon I'll be checking out the later seasons too, I borrowed a few boxes from a colleague at work (really, no kidding :)). Maybe I like them more now that I had a break from them for some time. :D

I still watch every Sunday despite the show being on a very slow and steady decline since seasons eight or nine.

Speaking of St. Paddies day check out the Whacking Day episode from season 4 for another early classic.

In Marge We Trust had Mr.Sparkle, which was wonderful. A Fish Called Selma is, I would say, probably the best Simpsons episode of all time. The day Phil Hartman died, the entire world died with him.

I found myself developing a growing apathy for the show, starting around the smashing pumpkins episode. "Lost Our Lisa" was my jumping off point; that's the one where Homer hurts himself while riding a cherrypicker.

A few reasons:

* It isn't the same show. And I really, really loved that show. I wanted more episodes.
* There's a dearth of good stuff out there. Not just specifically TV.
* Syndication has caught up to the poop. I used to be able to watch the reruns and have a good chance of hitting a solid episode, not so much anymore.

I winced while listening to the commentary to the movie. "If Homer is standing on the roof, then he has to fall off it."

"Remember Alf? He's back - in pog form."
