Which 3 Saturn Shooters to get next?

Post by Under Horizon »

Hey guys, I started a thread about a month ago about which Saturn Shooters to buy with a 200 dollar budget. I got some great suggestions and a lot of responses. I decided to expand my budget (200 really doesnt cut it) and I've picked up mostly cheap ones but a few moderate priced games. So far I have -

Soukyugurentai Otoyuko
DonPachi
Layer Section
Gunbird
Sengoku Blade
Strikers 1945
Parodius Pack
Kaitei Daisensou
Assault Suit Leynos 2
TwinBee Yahho Pack
Darius Gaiden

I realize a few of these weren't priorities but most were won in auction for 10-15$. Which three next??

Seconded, totally. Battle Garegga even offers you a superplay for free if you clear it (it's available as download on superplay.co.uk though, but the quality of the video is grose).

Furthermore I just have to recommend the following:

Sexy Parodius
Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius (better than the SFC version)
DoDonPachi (it's not that poor apart from the explosions)
Image Fight & XMULTIPLY
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus (esp. Salamander 2 is a blast)
Hyper Duel, if you like Thunder Force

@robotron
I still have to find out what people like about Thunder Force V and Blast Wind. :?

Darius II, even with it's wacky zoom in/zoom out feature.

Ah ok, I was to wonder why you didn't have that especially since it is modestly priced…

I will give another nod to Batsugun. A very fine and straight forward game and also includes both original AND Special versions.

Battle Garegga is a great game but the taste is something that may take some acquiring to…

That's easy, plus none of these will break the bank:

Twinkle Star Sprites
Battle Garegga
Batsugun

In my personal opinion

You need

Dodonpachi, caves best game.
Battle Garegga, Best shmup on the saturn.
Batsugun, old but great

Radiant silvergun is amazing and I play it all the time therefore for me it was a good buy, however its price omits it from the budget.

Battle Garegga.

Of course, don't forget when you get it to learn how to turn on "Red Ball Mode", so you can see the bullets properly. There's a FAQ on this site about it.

But that's the one to get.

Voice of common sense: You don't need any more games. Just buying 3 good games should be enough to keep you busy for years. Or at least that's my take on it. When you get a bunch of games at the same time, none of them ever get played.

Maybe not your bank, but $100+ for BG, and $90+ for Bat is pretty high in my book.

Another bank breaker, Image Fight/X-Multiply, around $100 for the PSX or Saturn versions, 2 shooters in 1 nice package.

Thunderforce Gold Pack 2
Thunderforce 5 (Special Pack if you can find it)
Battle Garregga

Hyper Duel and Blast Wind are too expensive - as is RS.

Get all the cheaper ones out of the way - and I also endorse Darius II, cause it's tough and fun.

To be honest I think red balling everything makes this game even more difficult to play for a beginner. One shots that are fired at the player are being "red balled" but all the patterns just stay in the same "realistic" style. With red balls AND realistic bullets at the same time, this game can become a real pain in the ass.
I recommend learning how to play it properly right from the start. The bullets are also quite visible, but one should play on RGB and on a not too small monitor.

When I originally bought the game when it came out, I found myself dying constantly, and quit playing out of frustration. I just couldn't see the bullets. I had the game all up until about 2 years ago or so, and popped it in again. I had the same problem, and then sold it on Ebay. Then I start playing it on MAME(the China version), and it has the red ball thing going on. Then I started to play it more and more, and then I got it again for Saturn. Now it's one of my top shmups ever.

So, just from personal experience, I think Red Ball is a good thing for people who first pop it in. Unless you don't have a problem seeing those little bullets that look like shrapnel. I can't, and I have 20/20 vision.

I got used to seeing the bullets in Battle Garegga pretty quickly, really.

Anyways, my suggestions would be.

Battle Garegga
Batsugun
Dodonpachi or Twinkle Star Sprites (TSS especially if you have friends that like video games)

I've seen BG around for about $80, but that doesn't include shipping.

I just bought a complete BG for $75 and Batusugun for $35 here. EBay prices are a horrible guide for determining value... And Shmups! forum users are generally much kinder to their own. ;)

I paid 75 euros for Garegga and 25 Euros for Batsugun some time back. This does not necessarily represent current prices, but I think one can get a BG for 80$ and Batsugun for 65$ anytime. Otherwise you have to wait untill a bargain pops up, like I did with Batsugun.
