Re: The great shooter joystick debate
I prefer the Sanwa JLF too for the same reasons brokenhalo mentioned in his post. It's resistance feels about right for making quick and precise maneuvers. The LS-32 is just too stiff.corbie wrote: I bought and installed a Seimitsu LS-32-01 stick on my Egret II cabinet and I've got to say, it works much better for me personally with shooters.
I'm curious to see how other shooter fans feel and what your favorite sticks are when playing shooters.
My favorite joystick for shmups is the "unknown" Seimitsu that's inside my XE-1ST2. It combines the smooth feel the JLF but with softer microswitches and short throw of the LS-32.
I just tried modding the LS-32-01 in my EGRET II by putting a Sanwa JLF spring on it instead of the original one. The result wasn't good enough. Now we're talking a stiff stick. You won't move it by accident, as brute force is kinda needed. I'm switching back asap.

@ ruffnec--some people prefer the octagonal gate over the square gate and vice-versa. the way i see it, the people whoa are more familiar with american parts (HAPP, iL) like the octagon gate better as it replicates the american arcade feel. i've tried both and in my opinion the square gate is the better gate. it's a actually a bit harder to find diagonals on the octagon gate, due to the fact that you have to hit the very corner to activate both microswitches (using down and back as an example) where as with a square gate you have a larger area to hit that constitutes down/back. fireball motions come out much smoother as well because on an octagon you have to grind along the edge of the gate and hit each corner to activate the switches properly, whereas on a square gate you can move in a much smoother arc and still hit the switches easily. it's all a matter of preference though. give it a try, you might like it.

I'd have to agree with brokenhalo of using a "square" gate on my both my Sanwa & Seimitsu joystick setups. You'd want the curcial edge being able to excute diagonal moves when barging through insane damaku titles from the likes of Cave. ^_~brokenhalo wrote:@ ruffnec--some people prefer the octagonal gate over the square gate and vice-versa. the way i see it, the people whoa are more familiar with american parts (HAPP, iL) like the octagon gate better as it replicates the american arcade feel. i've tried both and in my opinion the square gate is the better gate. it's a actually a bit harder to find diagonals on the octagon gate, due to the fact that you have to hit the very corner to activate both microswitches (using down and back as an example) where as with a square gate you have a larger area to hit that constitutes down/back. fireball motions come out much smoother as well because on an octagon you have to grind along the edge of the gate and hit each corner to activate the switches properly, whereas on a square gate you can move in a much smoother arc and still hit the switches easily. it's all a matter of preference though. give it a try, you might like it.

i haven't tried it, but the shaft of the sanwa stick might be longer than the hori stick, if you have room to, add some spacers to each screw (washers, whatever) to get the stick at the right height.RuffNEC wrote:what do you think. Will it support the gamplay if you change the joystick plate with a sanwa part ? I'm talking about the very first hori stick that came out on the 360

So what we really need is for Sanwa to make a levered microswitch version of the JLF.

Springs
Just to mess around, I've swapped the spring from my Hori EX2 for the 360 into a JLF stick on my MAME rig. It gives it a much softer feel.
Has anyone sourced springs to swap into the JLFs to try out different stiffnesses? I wouldn't be surprised if you could find springs to try off the shelf from the hardware store.

I switched to the octogonal gate on both of my sticks about a year ago and imo my performance has improved since. I would'nt want to switch back to the square one.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: I'd have to agree with brokenhalo of using a "square" gate on my both my Sanwa & Seimitsu joystick setups. Glad to hear that octogonal gate option has improved your shmup scores. It's just a matter of what works well for some folks...whatever floats your boat. ^_~antares wrote:I switched to the octogonal gate on both of my sticks about a year ago and imo my performance has improved since.
