Battletoads & Double Dragon-which port is the best??....
I love this game, but which port is the best? I assume they're all the same in terms of gameplay-the number of characters, stages, enemies, etc. I own a Genesis, SNES, and NES, and that's why I'm asking.
I also noticed that there is a Genesis port of Battletoads-is it any different from the NES port.

I did play the arcade PCB version of Battletoads a few times back in the mid 1990's at a local arcade hangout. Plus, I've seen it sold barebones & as a complete PCB kit for sale on eBay a few times back in the day. ^_~szycag wrote:SNES version is the best. Plus they're not "ports" ...pretty sure they were all developed in the same cycle despite being released a couple months apart. There was no arcade version.

Then not to pick on you- but how can you say the SNES version is best without having played both?szycag wrote:Wikipedia says the difficulty has been toned down quite a bit in the Genesis version and the game is more generous with lives. I haven't actually played it.
Oddly enough- it's not as good as the genesis version. I just recently ran them side by side on an XM29 for curiosities sake (same with the OG battletoads (nes) and Genesis). The Super Nintendo port is missing alot of sound effects, music, and overall is slower and controls a bit more 'clunkier'. Yes- it looks a little better- but the overall package is weaker. Some of the levels have been altered slightly (taking away some scrolling effects and such). Also- some of the music seems to be missing some of the bass (?)- it just feels 'softer'. Trust me- try them side by side on legit hardware and you'll see exactly what I mean.
That being said- I love my genesis for shooters- but just about anything else has usually been better on SNES (if they're out for both systems). This is just one exception to the rule I think.
Anyways- take what I said with a grain of salt. I have not tried the NES version recently- but I'm curious to see how it stacks up. Been casually hunting eBay for one.

Also- the Genesis port of Battletoads looks better on alot of parts (over it's Nes counterpart) but they tweaked some things. They took away some of the cutscenes (namely the "rappel drop from the ship" in the beginning for starters, and pretty sure the opening "ship pass over". The sprites/'hitboxes' for the toads are different. (I.e. walk to a small stub in the ground in both versions- the toads line up different- the genesis one the toads are bigger and 'go through' those things a little bit). The screen size is a little different between the two versions.
Oddly enough- I've beaten the NES toads- but I have not beaten the Genesis one (yet). Memory tells me something about it was harder- but I'm drawing a blank as I have not recently ran through either version completely.

I just played the Genny version today before reading this thread. Quite fun. I always choose the Dragons over the Toads however.
I seem remember getting to the shmup stage and not beating it or dying shortly thereafter. Also played a touch of Castlevania Bloodlines and Shinobi III.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Reading comprehension. I've played all the versions of Battletoads and Double Dragon but not the Genesis port of the original NES one.Battlesmurf wrote:Then not to pick on you- but how can you say the SNES version is best without having played both?szycag wrote:Wikipedia says the difficulty has been toned down quite a bit in the Genesis version and the game is more generous with lives. I see- my mistake on that part. I think what threw me off was the part where you made a small claim without any information or reasons behind your opinion. I went looking through the rest of the post and jumped the gun
So yeah- everyone is entitled to their own opinion- but if you have all 3 systems topic starter- give em all a go if you can. I'd be willing to bet the missing/changed/'soft' stuff on the SNES version of Battletoads + Double Dragon turn you off that one a bit.
