Barack Obama: Classy guy

Post by Acid King »

Gordon Brown gives Obama a pen holder made from a historic anti-slave ship and a first edition biography of Churchill, Obama gives him... DVDs. I don't know what's worse; the bomber jacket that Bush gave him last year or a box set of DVDs half the world has already seen. In the words of a random italian mafioso in the Sopranos: "...and you thought the Greeks were classless pricks."

Wow....I'm surprised Obama would do that. Maybe I believe too much hype.

Anything fancier than those would have been lambasted as "yet another example of wasteful entitlement spending and pet projects (and support for a 'Socialist' nation)." Heck, the DVDs themselves are probably going to be put forward as grounds for impeachment (no Reagan films!). :P

What gifts to give-- surely Obama's staff worries about that sort of thing, not Obama himself. And why are lame DVDs worse than a book one won't read and a pen holder? A pen holder?

I suppose if he'd spent any more money on his gift than that we'd be hearing about irresponsible spending.

Why blame the dude just because we don't have any holy relics? What the hell else was there to give the guy:

Ketsui PCB: Not american.

Piece of the cross Jesus was crucified on: Not american. Also phony.

F-22: Awesome fighter jet that takes out other guys miles before they even know you're there. A little over the gift cap unfortunately.

Blindly giving gifts is bullshit anyway. Since when did you get something (that wasn't food) you liked from someone that you didn't tell you wanted that thing. It's like a coincidence of wants groping for each other in the dark.

Classic case of utilitarianist vs. sentimentalist gift giving. I'd be way more disgusted by the bomber jacket. A lot of the movies in that set are really good... I still need to see Raging Bull, a good percentage of those movies I'd love to watch again and again. I guess I'm a bit more receptive since I like movies a lot.

What could Obama have given Gordon Brown as far as something "priceless" like a penholder made from Victorian anti-slave ships? How do you top something like that? This was a bit embarrasing maybe but far from completely tasteless. A collection of films that define America as sanctioned by the American Film Institute and the White House. Some of the commenters on that article were acting like he gave him fucking Along Came Polly or something.

I've loved watching the response to this story. When Bush pulled a similar gaffe, liberals were all over him for being a frat boy and out of touch and now it's the exact opposite. I wonder how long the Republicans will harp on this. I think it's better this time though because we get Twiddle's ironic racism.

I'd definitely prefer the DVDs though. The best thing to come of this was finding this website while searching for stuff about this story.

I've been pretty critical (although not posting a lot about it here) about Obama's Administration teething troubles.

But hell, the man's not made of money, and too busy to go shopping for that special something. The Brits were also mad about there not being enough flags on show - again, they're busy at the White House right now; take a number!

What I'm wondering about is whether Obama likes Churchill or not. He turned away the bust of Churchill that Bush left him in the Oval (the British loaned it), and now he gives some DVDs in return for a package that includes a seven-volume biography of the man.

I don't get it - the major American partner of Lend-Lease and FDR's closest ally in the war (and thus something of a player in the whole issue of deficit spending), and a guy with American blood - and who does Obama talk about? President Reagan.

Tri-Optimum reminds you that there are only
298 shopping days (that's 7171 hours)
until Christmas.

A pen holder? What the hell are you supposed to do with that? Nobody uses pen holders. They are like paper weights. Might as well be platinum dick holder, am I rite folks? Plus there were a lot of old historic anti-slave ships. Are we supposed to let out a cheer that one of them found a way to make money by scrapping his ship to make collectible pen holders and other types of kitschy hallmark store crap?

A churchhill biography? This is pure nationalistic garbage.

Seriously next time Obama should get this guy a paperweight made from the scrapped remains of a WW2 carrier and a first edition biography of Ronald Reagan. Then we'll see some nice euro whining...

I'm afraid that this doesn't hold a candle to Bush's impromptu massage of Angela Merkel (or his use of the word "Crusade" to describe our Mideast operations, for that matter). Though truth be told, filthy gay pot-smoking Commie that I am, I was never even aware of the supposedly infamous flight jacket gift before it was mentioned here - seriously, it's not like anyone, liberal or otherwise, needs to look to such superficial piffle to criticize Bush (as opposed to building a campaign on the fact that Obama mentioned arugula or that John Kerry windsurfed).

At least the dvd's won't go to a national museum or the likes and are actually useful...
