Neo Geo Shooters

Post by corbie »

I haven't bought any new games for my Neo Geo 25 candy cabinet in a long time and wanted to see if anyone had some good shooter recommendations. Below are the shooters I already own but I'd like to see if anyone can tell me any good shmups I'm still missing. :D

Here are the Neo shooters I own:
Viewpoint
Prehistoric Isle 2
Twinkle Star Sprites
Pulstar
Blazing Star
BULLET HELL

There is also Andro Dunos, but you said good shmups. Its interesting to see how much of it is copied wholesale from other games though.

Nothing wrong with Andro Dunos. Solid Old-school gameplay with a kick-ass soundtrack.

Good thing that SHMUPS! gives the Neo*Geo it's own section.

Not a huge number, but they've all got their charm. I recommend giving them all a honest go.

Sonic Wings 2 and 3 are great.
Ghost Pilots= G R E A T (if you like the machine gun sound, and if you want a very realistic 10 plane kamikaze attack experience plus also a "1 plane against a fire shooting tank! No way!" realistic experience)
Last Resort is amazing besides that stressfull 3rd level.
Pulstar is amazing besides that stressfull 3rd level.
Blazing Star rules
Andro Dunos= I'd like to at least blow up SOME of the bad guys (while credit feeding)
Zed Blade gets great after the BORING first levels.
Strikers 1945 plus is great
Alpha Mission 2 has GREAT style, combined with rediculous play mechanics in a too hard and long game- another realistic experience "you mean it's just me against the whole alien race? Good thing I've got these special weapons! Oh, wait, you mean there's MORE bad guys?".

Aero Fighters made me hate shmups for a long time. If it wasn't for this forum I'd still hate them today.

Agreed :D
Andro dunos FTW. It's the third game I bought for Neo Geo after Samurai Shodown (I don't want to remember how much I paid for it back in the day if I don't want to cry) and Aero Fighters II.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

I concur with Last Resort and Viewpoint. I would also say Andro Dunos, while basic, is still fun.

Random Thoughts:

Captain Tomaday is only good when you're fully powered up.

Zed Blade is not easy to 1CC, plus its a rare cart

I lost my Ironklad/Brikinger CD and still feel the pain

Ghost Pilots gets unplayable on the later levels (at least for me)

Viewpoint is good (makes note to 1CC  )

A few guys used to 1CC Alpha Mission 2 in my local arcade. It seems like an underplayed game these days.

Last Resort, Andro Dunos - both good but seen'em done'em.

Blazing Star pleasantly surprised me during the STGT

Pulstar is awesome if you have the time

Strikers 1945 Plus isn't bad, considering I'm not a fan of the way Psikyo games play.

I dig Andro Dunos, too. As much as it gets criticized for it's 'simplistic, cartoony' graphics, I always found that style very attractive for some reason...

(the game itself isn't too bad either ;))

There isn't really anything on the Neo I dig, kind of like how SNK stopped making worthwhile scrolling people-based shooters after losing the rotary sticks (aside from Ninja Commando I guess, but that's ADK...er).

I guess Pulstar and Blazing Star are okay but I find BS in particular more obnoxious than worthwhile :?

Why do you find Blazing Star to be obnoxious, Ed? Please do feel free to elaborate on why you think that.

I'm not a real fan of blazing star or pulstar any more either, I don't see why I'd waste my time playing them when I could be playing better shooters on other hardware. I'm a big neo fan too, but meh

I find BS's chaining to be obnoxious and fail-ridden.

It's not like some other game say MARS MATRIX (Mars Matrix title theme beat here) where you have choices how to chain. No, here it's all "go here do that or else you fail."

OBNOXIOUS

Neo is for the brawlers / fighters of various sorts, and Metal Slagheap and also for mahjong professionals. Oh, I almost forgot the Quiz games too. Neo is for those.
