castlevania arcade - NEW!

Post by DC906270 »

dunno if anyones heard of this, but i saw it in my local arcade centre in west london earlier tonight,. gonna go back with some dough to check it out soon. looks like a 3D adventure game, with a wii-like controller that you slash around in the air like a sword/light saber/whip type affair. probably already discussed in which case pls lock :P

First impressions of this game in the UK were made at the recent ATEI:

It's like they've recorded my dreams and turned them into a game! If Konami screws this one up I'm losing all hope for them.

Considering no one read the link, I'll just say for the record that at the atei the game wasn't functioning properly, so it was difficult to judge. What was clear is that the game was pure novelty - skill is at a minimum, extra credits and plenty of furious and pretty uncool arm waggling are the order of the day. There are cool features such as heart collecting and secondary weapons to be fired at the enemies, and it has a nice Castlevania feel.

But it's clear from the outset it's going to be gimmicky as hell - if you can get past this I expect some will get enjoyment out of it.

in case anybody missed it.

I will say this; this seems to me a lot like a zombie ninja swordfighting game Konami put out around 1997-98ish, back when motion detection was still all the rage (you had a sword then too, although I have a feeling it had a very limited range of motion). 2009 now, and motion sensing is still all the rage!

I dunno, I'd plunk in a quarter if I saw the thing, but given that they're still whacking on the unholy dead stable trio of pointy people / "highclass" animu design + polygrimes + wiimote garbage...I dunno.

I saw the first impressions, but a non-working game isn't much to go by. Also, when I read the above post, I was thinking the game used a mini-whip control that you swung (like the big plastic sword that you swung in that one Namco game) rather than the IR thing I saw in the YouTube footage for the game.

IR is actually pretty good for lightgun style games, but this game looked like a fairly boring House of the Dead type game rather than a real Castlevania, telling from YouTube vids. However, one interesting thing is that the game seems to have a female playable character with a whip, something I thought it wouldn't see in another Castlevania.

One good thing I can say from the YouTube footage, is that the game seems to have some nice music and a familiar sound when inserting the coin. It nice hearing the Konami pause sound again.

Watched a friend of mine play this, it looked really uninspiring. I actually think he got too bored to continue playing it. Should do really well on the Wii then

no, its half way up the A40 between Acton and the turn off onto the A406 North Circular, where the Acton Vue Cinema is (nearest tube station would be Park Royal or Hanger Lane on the Central line towards West Ruislip) .Just head for the Vue cinema/ McDonalds, and its in there with the bowling alley etc. and lots of other arcade machines, like after burner climax, mario kart arcade, time crisis 3 & 4 etc.

i may go there tomorrow night, so ill take some pics

"Please hold the controller securely and do not swing it too violently."

This seems a lot like Konami's Tsurugi (2001), that samurai sword game which was released as Blade of Honor in the USA. Having liked Tsurugi somewhat, I'd probably try CTA if I saw it. Hopefully this is far better than the ATEI unit let on. Any Wii version of this could likely get the gameplay nailed, but the graphics will take a bad hit.

TBH, I don't care for Let's Go Jungle. Playing with a wired gun (i.e. Crisis Zone) would've been better, and the QTEs are awful gimmicky. Sega's Rambo is good but not great- thanks to some cheap hits that mar the game. I think Sega puts life boxes in their gun games as a cop-out. Namco's Razing Storm will destroy Rambo, I'm 110% sure. RS is obviously Crisis Zone II, and I can't see Namco messing this one up.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Looks like the sort of game that I will never play :D
I have never played that Let's Go Jungle either, have played the Silent Hill game, but wished that I hadn't. I really feel that a lot of the latest arcade games have been all poor, and it is sad to see places getting rid of good games in place of this rubbish. I haven't seen this game in person yet so I can't really review it. :D

In responce to Razing Storm, I could easily beat the location test version of the game, the game felt quite good, but slightly boring after a few plays.
The bosses were too hard on that version. Also the guns looked very expensive, so they prolly wouldn't get replaced.

Dont be so sure. I do agree with you about rambo being a bit meh and Raizing (i meant to do that) storm being a whole fucking lot better. They had both of these cabs in DX form in the trafford center in Manchester UK (namco station in the food cort) Raizing storm (and again) was there a week and Rambo is still there. There are ques for rambo and it was all dead around the Raizing storm (three times a charm)

Rambo has the licence backing it up. The casual gamer knows rambo. It even features HD movie clips which blend in to the game

I noticed this too, I was on Razing Storm all the time though :D It was only a test version, which explains why it went so quickly.

Yeah, people play Rambo just because of the name, it really feels like the designers couldn't be bothered to make the game, and most likely spent most of their time on sticking those film clips into the game. I am upset with the direction that lightgun games have gone.. and I'm just in some ranty mood.
