I keep hearing about these guys. I do like it, but am not super excited by it. There seems to be split in this sound really early where you have bands like Wire with a more open, warmer sound and Joy Division with a colder, claustrophobic sound. There of course have been a lot of Joy Division imitators but not so much Wire. The sound which crops up in NZ in the early 80's and on seems to come a lot from these bands, including early Bauhaus. In that transition though, the claustrophobic feeling was mostly lost, and I think for me personally, I never felt it was really necessary.

I also saw A Place to Bury Strangers live and thought they were great and bought their cd. Unfortunately I find the cd quite boring. It's got a good sound but no soul...nothing really there to reel you in and really make you want to listen to it..

Anyway, back into a Boris/Sunn O))) kick, in anticipation of Sunn's new album. The personnel on that album is ridiculous.
Pelican's new effort should be pretty good too, considering they're on Southern-Lord now, and have stated that they wanna go back to their heavy roots.

I fully agree with you, I'll always have a place for NIN in my deeply buried adolescent heart no matter how cheesy, but at least he's being somewhat adventurous with tour mates, sadly the majority of the crowd at both shows didn't enjoy either opening act. I had previously heard Boris and I'm a pretentious enough prick to enjoy more then my fair share of noise so I was looking forward to it.
As far as Sunn 0))) if you like Drone and you haven't you need to hear some angelic process, sadly most of their recordings are not very well done and the main element of the band has passed on in the last year.
^^^Yep. Probably the first decent stuff they've released since the Low Level Owl albums (their last two releases left a lot to be desired.) Not quite a return to form but close.
Listening to the most recent Dead C record again as I was a bit unenthusiastic the first time through. I'm more impressed this time. It's quite hypnotic for all its lo fi repetition but I think the long tracks would benefit from a little more in the way of dynamics. Fearsome sound though.
Regarding the Dead C....I'm not sure I've really enjoyed much by them since Tusk. *shrugs*

Just dug out some old Mock Orange CDs, great band.
Also found all three of Capture the Flag's albums, great little indie/punk band from Downriver Detroit some years ago. Members went on to form Heads Will Roll, and the guitarist now plays for Dillinger Escape Plan.
I didn't think the album proper was too hot. Much too long and a worrying amount of 'filler' too. Shame, because I really like them. It's worth digging out some of their earlier unreleased stuff on Soulseek. February and Tuesday are absolutely gorgeous low-fi variations on the same sets of samples.
It's a good track, but it's also been on the Health 'Disco' remix album and the Crystal Castles/Health split ep. I really wanted to hear some new tracks on the album
Also, I think not nearly enough is made of Alice's voice on the album.
Small Brown Bike, anything by this band. Such an amazing band, and awesome that they've been playing The Fest in Gainesville every year, giving some glimmer of hope for a come-back.

apocalypse domani ost (aka cannibal apocalypse) came across some deadstock o.g italian lps of this!! amazing! not as good as fabio frizzi or goblin but a similar sound.
nucleus -we'll talk about it later (ian carr just died !! a true great of uk jazz in the 60s and progressive jazz in the 70s)
peter thomas -chariot of the gods ost (some insane proto drum n bass on here as well as some decent spy jazz etc)
alex gradsky-russian songs (crazy russian space prog opera with some amazing synth work)
a certain ratio-sextet (uk new wave with a nice liquid liquid/esg type of sound and some ill proto hip hop ish!)

I have been listening to this album nonstop since a friend suggested it, the only thing I can really describe it as is noisier Bloc Party that doesn't suck....no offense to Bloc Party fans out there.
