Hopping into the PC-Engine market
Rayxanber III is better than II in pretty much every way, but it's still a bird from the same flock. It's less glitchy, a bit more fair, and much better balanced than II, but it has the same basic mechanics. May I recommend going for some of the Soldier games? Super Star Solider, Final Soldier, Solider Blade, Star Parodia...? They're all quite easy, but wonderfully fast and fun. They'll help make you feel less bitter about Rayxanber II I think. ^_^
And yeah, be sure to check out some of the platformers for the system as well. Plenty of great stuff there. Dracula X is awfully pricey (worth it IMHO), however, and since you've already bought quite a few expensive games, I'd hold off and buy some of the good-but-cheap stuff.

If you ask me, I would say, to stick w/ the Pc-engine and check out some more games. Get some cheap ones like dragon spirit, raiden, gate of thunder, and kyukyoji tiger (SP?) I think when you begin to have a better idea at what the system can do and it's limitations you will begin to appreciate the games on many different levels
Last time I went to japan i bought a duo and about 30 different games. I played them all one after another looking for some elusive 1989 era predecessor to battle garrega or do donpachi.
At first I was very dissapointed with the pc-engine games in general. As some one who got their shmup chops on the saturn, the games all seemed lackluster. After putting about 25 of the 30 games I bought in storage, I played the prettiest ones once in awhile.
after about a year of having my duo, it is now my system of choice. It's all I ever play. Many of the games I first dissmised as lame I have re-descovered and now love them to death. Dragon spirit and aero blasters being two examples. I think you should check out soldier blade and Spriggan
Dracula X: chi no rondo is a must.
Just my personel experiance w/ the duo.
Also: Why is the 93 carnival eddition of Nexzr better than the original. From what I heard the carnival edittions were just stripped down versions with just time attacks?

That's only '92 Alzadick, or whatever it's called. The carnival version of Nexzr has the full, original game, plus the caravan modes. It's also a hell of a lot cheaper than the original release.scrilla4rella wrote:Also: Why is the 93 carnival eddition of Nexzr better than the original. I have several adventure games for the PCE, including a couple of the "dating sims." They're more for the collection than for play though.Capt. Takehiko wrote:Anyone play the dating sims, etc?

Of the non-dating adventure games, there are some really good ones, including Snatcher (yay, another version of Snatcher!

No, a forum member picked it up in Akibahara for me. And I did send him all the tell tale signs of the bootleg and nagged him constantly about it. So hopefully it'll be good. It wasn't sealed, but it was mint and in pristine condition with everything (obi strip, reg. card), so I'm hoping I'm in the clear.Palmer Eldritch wrote:Christ, I hope not! That *WOULD* be the last strawjp wrote: *Sits and waits to find out he bought a bootleg of Sapphire*![]()
Did you buy it from VGI? If so, you´re in the clear.

So I got some HuCards in today and checked out Ordynes and Super Star Soldier.
I'm not selling this machine. Those games f'ing rocked. I didn't play Final Star Soldier cause I wanted to beat SSS first, but that 4th level boss just kept cheaping me out (bastard).
And then my system died. No clue why, but it did. The CD portion conked out Friday, I thought I could still get some HuCard enjoyment while I waited for the replacement... but no. No power... no nothing. Just dead. Dead console. *sigh*
My favorite part is that I know have Star Parodier and Alzadick, with Sapphire coming in Friday or Monday, and no Arcade Card Duo for a month because the seller went out of town without mailing it.
Oh well, maybe one day I'll have a working PC-Engine Duo R... *sigh*

Man! You've had the worst luck with this system (and that shitty seller, jeez, what a dick). Don't give up on it. There's lots of classic, fun games to be played. Get in contact with Matt. He might be able to fix it.jp wrote:And then my system died. No clue why, but it did. Hopefully you can get it repaired. If not, keep your eyes peeled for US sellers who have Duos for sale. I reccomend either 16-bit or thewestexit.net. I'm pretty sure I read on his (TWE) site that he's going to be getting some Duos in soon. Get in contact with him and reserve one.Oh well, maybe one day I'll have a working PC-Engine Duo R... *sigh*
In the meantime, if you want to check out your CD games, MagicEngine will work. PM me and I'll help you out with that.

The seller isn't crap, she's actually been VERY helpful and cooperative. I should have a replacement console any day now.
That said...
The whole lot is being sold. I should have a small window of time to play Star Parodier as the buyer is going to be out of town for 2 weeks... but yeah, I needs money to buy my 2nd Hitachi Navi HiSaturn. Heh, now I just need to get rid of that Sapphire (which I never even got to play).
Its sad. But I think I need to focus on finishing my Saturn collection before I start on anything else. 12 games away from the entire shmup collection? And only a handful of games after that and I own every english-accessible 2D game on the system? Yeah, I needs to just finish that. Then I'll get back into the PC-Engine... and this time... I won't buy crap games to start off!!!

Re: Hopping into the PC-Engine market
WISE FWOM YO GWAVE
Well this is a blast from the past. It's interesting to look at these posts a decade(!) later now that retro gaming has exploded in popularity and prices for pretty much everything are through the roof. I sold all my stuff years ago, but I feel for the poor guy who bought my Duo (assuming he kept it) - apparently the 1st model Duos (not R or RX) are loaded with garbage capacitors that eventually bust and will need replacing.
Other fun gaming/shmup things that have happened since then:
- Wii Virtual Console
- XBox 360 and Cave titles
- NES RGB conversion kits (no more destroying PC10/VS boards)
- The rise of YouTube and tons of Longplays, Superplays, review shows, etc.
- Cheap but effective SCART -> Component converters
- Indie gaming revolution
- Shmuplations (those are great!)
Am I missing anything?
