Arcade games can kill you

9. 18-Year-Old Killed by an Arcade

Peter Burkowski was an 18-year-old “A” student that stopped into an arcade at about 8:30 p.m. one Saturday. He set a couple high scores in the Berzerk machine, turned away from it to pay some attention to another game, and as soon as he put his quarter in, collapsed from a heart attack. The autopsy revealed scar tissue in Peter’s heart that effectively made him a “ticking time bomb” set off by a video game which apparently increased his blood pressure and heart rate dramatically.
I'm off to play Berzerk. This might be my last post :o

Arcade games have bettered my eye/hand coordination that in a few instances, it has saved my life like when having to suddenly brake to a complete stop because of direct on-coming traffic in my face (meaning driver hurling towards me without any intention of slowing down whatsoever). You never know about them other crazy-ass drivers out there. ^_~

The guy had to have some underlying heart problem or defect. Video games didn't kill him. If he didn't get excited by them, it would have been sex, or sports, or drugs, or rollercoasters that would have killed him with his condition.

If I thought about shmups when I was driving, I might try to chain somehow, and I don't know how that would work out.

I rember hearing about the BERZERK MURDER way back when. Supposedly, the kid mentioned in this article was actually the second fatality. Another teenager died shortly after getting a score of... 6660.

Anyway
Spike article wrote:There is little doubt that Devin Moore’s cop-killing spree and subsequent theft of a police cruiser were inspired by the ultraviolent video game series Grand Theft Auto. Moore took one gun from an officer, shot three others with it, and fled the station in a police cruiser. Moore was a obsessed with the GTA series of video games, and, once captured, he told police "Life's like a video game. You've got to die sometime."
He deserves the death penalty. Not for shooting the cops, but for saying that.

The dude playing Kano in that Mortal Kombat ad is totally into it. He's thinking, "I really want to kill this fucking kid." And look at that kid, he knows it too.

ZOMG I'm still alive! And Berzerk sucks ass...

Kano totally looks like Vin Diesel in that ad. And apparently Raiden made that hat from a checkers board.

Back to the article, this caught my attention:
8. Vengeance Killing for Virtual Sword

Qiu Chegwei lent his Dragon Sabre for the online game Legend of Mir 3 to his friend Mr. Zhu Caoyuan. Mr. Zhu being a resourceful a-hole, sold that thing for about $675. Mr. Chegwei, though, being a bigger a-hole and less resourceful, stabbed the hell out of his friend with a very real knife, killing him. Mr. Chegwei is currently serving a life sentence, which could be suspended to 15 years for good behavior.
I'm not trying to justify Zhu's death but holy shit, talk about being a huge asshole.

Honestly, it's better this way. He was 18. Imagine if he was on top of some chick and keeled over. Scarred for life, man, scarred for life.

And now we know why there isn't a western arcade market anymore. I guess the Japanese simply have stronger hearts.
