Anyone Dealing with Quake Live Frustration?

Post by RedDeathRunning »

Id just let loose the free, open beta and I'm a cool 13,726 in que. I'm interested (though more skeptical than interested) to see how quake will run in a browser.

It's pretty cool... just not a fan of the downtime it keeps getting.

It runs perfectly.

edit: And woah you're right, what the hell is this queue business? I was able to play... two days ago, I think.

When I want Quake III, I'll just load up the old version. That's all this is, right?

Don't really see the point of Quake III interwebs browser edition.

Aside from the placement match standstill at the beginning of the registration process, it's a cool idea. Stat tracking is always nice and it seems to support more resolutions now, but there are some bugs to be worked out.

Definitely some bugs - for some reason my mouse likes to stop tracking mid-game...annoying to say the least. All and all, I think it's a good game to release for free.

Besides, you don't have to play it in your browser - it supports full screen.

Hopefully it'll be a little more stable in the future. And I'm glad there are some instagib servers floating around. :)

I played it a bit during the closed beta, it was pretty stable then. The thing is, since you have to install the plugin for it, you won't necessarily be able to play it on any computer, like say at work or school. Which really defeats the point of a browser game.

Finally got to play it. Pretty much same game as Q3A but still excellent. Also, some asshat stole my nick :(

You really don't see the point of Quake 3 with added stats tracking, matchmaking, buddy tracking etc. ???

I was in the closed beta for a few weeks before it opened. It's really great. And I still really suck at Quake duels.

From what I hear the open beta has been a mess with everybody trying to get on at once. I'll wait a week or so for it to cool down before I return to it, I think.

Also, yes, this is basically just Quake 3, but it adds some important things: stat tracking, matchmaking, buddy list, and a bunch of tweaks to the gameplay - movement is faster, and weapons have been tweaked slightly almost across the board for better balance. Also iD will be supporting QL with patches and such, which have (I believe) stopped for Q3. Plus, it's entirely free. QL is just superior to Q3 in every way except perhaps lack of mod support, and lack of multi-platform support, both of which might be a big deal to some people (understandably). And it's entirely free, you just download the plug-in and it launches from your browser, fullscreen and everything.

There was actually an interview with Id recently where they said that mods and user designed levels would probably show up for quake live further down the line. I'm skeptical of how much freedom they would actually allow for this, considering they mentioned it down the road as "officially endorsed user mods and maps," but who knows. Considering the company has been extremely open (i.e. with releasing the code for most of it's old games, etc...) it wouldn't be too surprising if they figured out a way to incorporate mods into quake live at some point.

It's also a free way to kill off open source development of the old Quake III code, amirite?

Also, lol @ 28K queue. Somehow I have trouble believing that many people are trying to get on at once, but...I guess it somewhat explains why iD's FTP is always slower than molasses.

While it has its downsides, I'm eager to play this.
