For those who own arcade cabinets
For those who own arcade cabinets
I'm very curious to see how many of you guys own arcade cabinets. I got into a shooter discussion on Gamefaqs a few days ago and it basically turned into a "your an idiot for spending that kind of money on arcade cabinet and pcbs" melee. I was even called a spoiled brat at one point.
While I've owned a Neo Candy 25 cabinet for about 9 years, I only recently purchased an Egret 2 after wanting one for many years. Below is my meager collection so far.
Neo Candy 25 cabinet + 36 Neo Geo MVS carts
Taito Egret 2
Deathsmiles kit
Gunbird 2 pcb
Ibara kit
Muchi Muchi Pork kit

I've got a lot of cabs, and I've been very gung-ho about collecting pcb's the last 10 or so years. Pretty much all my extra money has gone towards it. But a few years ago I had twins, switched jobs, got a new house, and ran out of money- so started getting into emulation a bit. That resulted my current attitude- sell every pcb that can't be emulated, sell them when they become emulated, start amassing computers to put into the cabs, try and end up with enough extra money to buy unemulated boards. I used to collect the boards for a feeling of permenance in the collection- but as they break, I feel like the rom on the computer feels MORE permenant. And my proper cabs with good monitors and AVGA's are the best, buy I also don't even mind the cheapo cabs with computer monitors in them, and the loud windows xp sound when I turn it on deosn't bug me.
Plus, I never cared about the hardware, I care about the easthetics of the game itself. As soon as DDPDOJ is emulated, mine's for sale.

Don't let anyone make you feel bad because of your hobbies, or anything else for that matter.corbie wrote:I got into a shooter discussion on Gamefaqs a few days ago and it basically turned into a "your an idiot for spending that kind of money on arcade cabinet and pcbs" melee. I say, if it is a thing that you love doing, then do it because life is too short not to!
I hope myself to purchase or build a full arcade cab one day. I just got to get my own house first

These are probably the same people that spend tons of cash on car stereo's and buy the most expensive jeans. At least in your case you get most of your investment back.Gamester wrote:Don't let anyone make you feel bad because of your hobbies, or anything else for that matter.corbie wrote:I got into a shooter discussion on Gamefaqs a few days ago and it basically turned into a "your an idiot for spending that kind of money on arcade cabinet and pcbs" melee. This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
3 cabs (Naomi, Windy II, Lordsvale MVS).
I use MAME as a plaything in and of itself - but other than old dedicated games (Robotron) I far prefer to play on original hardware.
And of the original hardware, other than the games I've always loved (TNZS, SF2T), I've been aiming to pickup stuff that doesn't work in MAME. It's a kinda rebellion against the amount of time I've spent (wasted) configuring MAME to be perfect and never quite attaining it.
I'm aiming to have 2 JAMMA cabs - one hori, one tate - and a third MVS cab - all of which I can move around without too much hassle, with decent reliable monitors. Not quite settled on what they'll be yet - 2 Windy's and the Lordsvale would be the easiest, or 2 Egrets and the Lordsvale, or a Japanese MVS cab. I'd sorely love 2 Pony II 18's or III 25's though.

You said 'gamefaqs' - that's like a giant tombola full of idiots.
I've got 7 cabs, a little under 100 PCBs, 3 pinball machines. Just using those last 3 as an example - they take up the same usable floor space as a pool table needs. Nobody would criticise one of those, it's all a matter of perspective.

If you got the room for both a pool table and some candy cabs...the more, the merrier. ^_~bloodflowers wrote:You said 'gamefaqs' - that's like a giant tombola full of idiots.

i love it when people call me spoiled, it means ive done good
worked hard for everything i have, never got anything for free, come from a lower working class upbringing (i actually supported my parents finacially several times in the past).
game wise i have 4 cabs, 60-70kits and maybe 2 dozen loose PCBs in my collection, a pretty nice videogame collection aswell.

the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
Well it's nice to see so many people buying up the cabinets and pcbs as well. I've only just begun, but I look forward to many more years of enjoying my Egret 2, and possibly any other cabinets I decide to invest in down the road. I just ordered a Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu kit and I can't wait to get it in and play it.
Anyone here own the Pink Sweets pcb? I love Ibara and Muchi Muchi Pork, so is it fairly safe to say that I'll enjoy Pink Sweets. I only ask because the pcb is a bit expensive for a bare bones pcb.

MMP is more expensive than Pink Sweets bare board right now.
I love PS, but mostly because its a complicated rank based puzzel to be solved. Trying to play it without any strategy is going to be frustrating. Read up on the strategy guide first to make sure this sounds like something you want to invest time into.

I bought my Muchi Muchi Pork game as a new kit so it was fairly high dollar that way, but I had no idea the bare bones pcb was more expensive than the Pink Sweets board. Thanks for the info. I might at least give it a try.

I feel like I come up short compared to a lot of people here, but at the same time I'm not a huge collector of things, just a part time enthusiast. I have gradius 3 and 4, RSG and terra diver, and everything else I play on a mamepc (and game PC in general. i run PC shumps and bemani games and all sorts of other neat goodies on it) inside my Midway style cab.
I have made my various switchable control panels from scratch, and love this cabinet for its huge inner space, the fact that I can make CPs for it pretty easily, and the modular nature of the entire control box unit ( i have an extra wide control box i'll be making into an arcade style beatmania controller. see the difference between, say, this and this )
The only thing I regret not being able to play is Death Smiles. I do love that game.
