I'm not too sure why the actual game screen is like, 45% of the total screen area. Talk about overbloated sidebars!

I don't know if I'd want 1080p worth of screen to cover in a Xevious game. Either too much to keep track of or like 1942 Joint Strike where there was so much room to move around none of the patterns were that threatening.

Looks like it could be good to me.

I just picked up Xevious 3D/G+ on PS1, which I haven't played yet, and while I find it hard to believe it's that good, I heard it's OK. I've always been up for more Xevious than just the original, so I'm hopeful that this PSN release will satisfy that desire with a decent game.

I've said it before but the best way to take advantage of a widescreen display in a vert, without compromising the traditional gameplay elements borne out of a 3:4 aspect ratio, is to make us of 'in-game borders'. Let most of the action take place in a centralized region that corresponds to a 3:4 aspect ratio and draw a landscape or a motership or what ever at the sides of it. This way you make use of the whole screen even in widescreen mode whilst retaining the classic gameplay. Of course you would probably not get away with that in remakes of classics.

I wonder how the music will sound like. The original one was pretty... grating.

I have nothing against borders - I perfectly agree that a game born vertical should not go fullscreen in 16:9. However, those borders seem just too wide, and I don't understand why they framed the screen even on the upper and lower edge. :?

you know you love it... don't lie.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

A new Xevious is absolutely fine by me, but what's this "for Home" business? If it's PSN that's fine but if they mean it's only going to appear in Home like those crummy versions of Echo Chrome and Breakout, I'm not impressed.

I completely agree on that part. I am happy with PSN games, in fact got pretty much addicted to that stuff buying most major new releases now. Somehow I like the idea to play some quick game without flipping in the disc.

However log on to that silly HOME thing to play a game? Sorry but that's not gonna happen for me. I somehow hope for a release of this one outside of home.

I'm sure they've improved it, since they already did so (IIRC) with the previous Xevious revision back in the 90's.

Wow.

I really want more Xevious. Sadly, the newest console I own is an older PS2. Time for upgrayddd?

Fun fact: It's actually pronounced Zeh-vee-oos (ゼビウス), not Zee-vee-us. I know, who cares, but it's a fun fact!

I'm a Xevious freak, but also a bit of a purist. I don't even play the old-school revisions. I do have all the games in the series and even a 3D/G PCB, so I'm sure I'll end up getting this as well.

I must admit I tried it just very quickly. Looks like visual improvements only to me. I think they should have re-done the SFX as well. Not sure if they actually did, but to me it didn't sound like. So apart from the newer graphics it's a bit too classical for my taste to seriously play it for long.

Might give it another try over the weekend, a bit in a rush today.

I don't think you have to log on to Home to play the games in the Namco.comm package - I downloaded the demo from the Jpn PSN store and you can play the games outside of home. Dammit, I want to buy the full game but I can't find anyone selling lesser value point cards right now (don't want a $50 card stuck on my Japan-only account).

As said earlier, you can get the Namco.comm PSN game, yes. Or somehow play it in home. I am glad it still got a "normal" release.

I used to feel that way too. Xevious was one of the first shooters I ever played, after all. But after trying Xevious Arranged, I don't think I've touched the original.

That looks surprisingly good. Xevious fans should get a real kick out of this. Also kinda makes me want to dig out my copy of Xevious 3D+G again.

I'm with you on that. The music is eerie and alien sounding. It adds a lot of atmosphere to the game.
