We need something like Change Air Blade and Twinkle Star Sprites on Kaillera; that would be awesome.

How would a MMO Shmup work anyway? I can imagine some of the conversations:

VicVipar5402: does ne1 know where i can get options.

OMGHaxorz2304: STFU newb

ShidenXOmega: ne1 want to help me level up plasma sword with me? i know point camping spot.

Lol...Don't think it'll work, but if it's set up like a racing or FPS game, with games up to eight players, then would be awesome. *Imagines a maniac shmup with 8 players and loads of bullet spam thrown their way*

I suspect the strategy guide would look something like this (Yeah, I know, wrong genre, but it still applies.)

I meant a shmup that I could play on my Internet browser.
Or d/l so I can play it offline, or something like that.

Sorry for the mixup.

the closest thing to this by far would have to be subspace. used to be owned by sony, but it was sold back to the developers or something, and now the only servers are private ones i believe.

http://sshq.forumhq.net/

i think that site has all you need, but as i havent played in a while, i could be wrong.

I've been checking this board out the last few days as my interest in shmups has come back. Didn't plan on posting but registered when I saw this thread.

I'm a longtime Subspace pilot (now called Continuum) and would have to say it's the closest thing to a shmup online. The game has been around for over 10 yrs and still has a hardcore base of players. It's pretty much set up like 'asteroids' but against other people...8 different ships all with distinct firepower, handling and speed.

The game doesn't have nearly the talented players it use to, but alot of vets are still around and an influx of new players lately has kept the game interesting. The best players still have league games in the Chaos zone and along with Alpha are the only 2 zones that play like the game was intended. I would recommend these zones to anyone starting off. Most other zones consist of one shot fast bullets or powerball type games, while popular isn't what a shmup player would like. It's highly addicting and the reason I've played it off and on so long.

LOL... yeah, this is exactly what would happen. Also, just imagine playing a shmup with lag. Eww.

Yeah, lag=sucks. Not to mention that there always be some asshole who hogs all the powerups, but is a crappy player so he would die all the time. If I made a shmup like that, when a player is at max power, the power ups will go thru that player or bounce off of him.

Welcome to the forum.

That's interesting, I recall seeing Subspace back when it first came out but I didn't have a fast broadband connection at the time. I might have to check this Continuum out... its system requirements should be low enough to run on my laptop, at least. :P

I don't quite recall, is it a truly persistent 24/7 MMO world where you can level up your ship for months, or just a small skirmish multiplayer kind of thing?

It's really be something seeing an epic shmup-based MMO game suddenly appear and dominate the online market right next to stuff like World of Warcraft...

Maybe it could have a huge lobby of players where people can get together and form teams to go on missions. There could be sort of an "overworld", where you control your ship asteroids-style with free movement, and from there on you can access different vertical and horizontally scrolling stages. If you can beat the stages, you progress through the overworld, where you can explore and find more areas... There could even be raid stages, where you have to team up with like 20 other players to take on some huge boss with multiple parts (R-Type comes to mind). As you level up your character/ship, you'll have access to different types of parts and skill-trees - there could even be different classes of fighters you select when starting a new game.

Anyways, just rambling away false hopes and dreams...

On the old forum I proposed a design for an MMO Shmup as my "dream game", that worked like a cross between Psyvariar, Planetside and FFXI

Of course, if a really great MMO Shmup like that did come along, many players on this forum would probably end up losing years of their lives to it... so it's a bit of a blessing in disguise perhaps that we don't have one

I would imagine it being fairly similar to Armada for Dreamcast.
Feedback will set you free.

Well, you can play plenty of shooters online with MAME, ZSNES, Gens, and other emulators.

IRT above:

yeah that too.

I played a Shmup called "Phoenix Assault" on Shockwave.com. IMO it's in the same vain of R-Type. It had some good graphics on there. But you could only play like 15 minutes of it, before it would say: Time's up. PLZ buy our game. I was like "WTF, I wanted to play this game, losers."

I also played a game called Atomic Tank (I Think) on Shockwave.com and it was pretty good.

(Yeah they don't like shumps that much lol, well actualy that's a lie one of my firends do but the rest do not!)
