A possible way round Xbox 360 region protection??

If you had access to a Japanese 360, could you copy a Japanese region game to its hard drive then put its hard drive on an american or euro machine to play the game?

No, because even when you install the game to the hard drive, the console checks that the disc is present (and correctly signed, regioned, etc.) before playing the game.
