Crappiest D-Pad For Fighters?

Post by KindGrind »

I know that they're both terrible, but which would you prefer to play SF4? Unsure as to for which console I will pick this up...

Although I don't play alot of fighters, I have to agree that the 360 D-Pad fails at 2D gaming in general.

I will never play Street Fighter 4 with either.

If you're already spending $60+ for a plastic disc and then several hundred for a console,it makes sense to drop an extra few on a decent arcade controller. its not like i'll be using either console to play anything else anyways.

The 360's dpad is horrible and it makes playing any game a pain.

360's dpad is definitely the greater of two evils here.

Good input so far- but the word on the street is SF4 for 360 has less loading time. That- coupled with the fact that I want to grab a stick anyways make that a no brainer. Couple with the fact that 360 controllers have removable battery packs (it'll be lol when these damn things for PS3's quit holding a charge), and the D-Pad 'upgrade' is about an hour process make the decision easier for me.

That being said- PS3 is f-in awesome for movies- and KZ2 looks really good. I did have fun with UT3, Uncharted, Warhawk, Siren, and a few others- but my 360 gets loads more play.

I know I've went off a bit- but there are many other things that you'll want to consider other than a dpad on console choice :)

They're both bad...though it's far easier to mod the 360 pad. Got an exacto knife or a screwdriver and sandpaper? Yer set.

Edit: You know the SF4 pads are out, right? If you get one of the good ones they're great. That being said, supposedly the PS3 versions have less problems.

Which ones are the good ones?

Also, I'm with you, BS (!). My PS3 has been collecting dust since forever and I play my 360 a lot.... so I was thinking of picking it up for the 360. The achievements are a nice plus, too. Thanks for the input.

Unfortunately, you can't tell. I returned two before I got a perfect one. Thank you Best Buy return policy.

I tried playing Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD on a 360 pad, couldn't pull moves off for shit, so I'd say the 360 pad, terrible for fighters.

Both pads are fine, button layout excepting. I've used both extensively and could pull off walk-up 360s in 3S without a problem (10/10 times). Lots of people complain but it's very usable if you're used to a pad. The 360 pad actually feels a bit more comfortable to me (although the 6A buttons are more responsive). Still, I only use a stick nowadays.

Just get a 360 since the better (and worse) players will probably play online there. Both games have pointless achievements/trophies. The initial images showed that Capcom didn't bother to anti-alias the PS3 version so it should look more jagged but crisp unless that's a setting or if Capcom changed that.

Also the PS3 version has no anti-aliasing.

It's seems many big multi-platform releases these days have better graphics, less slowdown, ... on the 360 albeit the PS3's superior hardware power. It's strange but that's the way it is. Add the fact that often the 360 versions of games feature exclusive DLCs and the 360 becomes the better choice.

Huh? The IGN review said they were identical (except PS3 needs the HDD install to get similar load times), I'm sure they'd notice no AA? The Eurogamer review also mentioned no differences, though that seemed to amount to a Street Fighter fan on his knees weeping.

lol @ the 360 d-pad, it makes running in a straight line in Pro Evo/Winning Eleven an impossible task. Also I find myself jumping quite a bit trying to do Balrog's charge punch on HDR.

There's nothing strange about it. Some developers are just developing for the 360 and pulling out a lazily implemented PS3 port afterward. If they don't bother to touch it up, then yeah, the PS3 seems identical, if not worse. It's commonly recognized that the PS3 has more potential but 3rd party developers aren't bothering with it and there hasn't been a showcase 1st party game yet.

Slower loading times are a result of the slower BD reading speed. SFIV is not known to have slowdown in either version; in fact, the PS3 version is confirmed to run at approximately arcade speed whereas the 360 version is rumored to run a bit faster.

:?:
What are the issues of the "bad" SFIV pads?

I must be lucky as I have one and I love it! Works great and my friends whom came over this past weekend said it was good too.

Oh and in regard to the topic…

having played on both pads id have to say the 360 pad is the worst! it just isnt designed for fighters at all, when sf2:HF was released I almost threw my controller at the wall in frustration trying to pull of a dragon punch lol

I decided to buy the PS3 version, since my console is totally collecting dust. I took the plunge and snatched a HRAP3, too. This is my first stick and I hope I made the right choice. It's considerably cheaper than the X360 counterpart and can be used on the PC as well. With firmware update 1.70 the ps2 games are playable on the ps3, too. So I guess I won't be fiddling with the d-pad for long after all...

360. PlayStation pads are decent.

Of course, the Gamecube's is quite possibly the worst of them all.

Y'all are a bunch of nancy boys. The Mad Catz 360 controller's d-pad doesn't even have a depression in the middle aside from a tiny circular hole, rather like a DS pad but raised, spongy, and with more rounded edges (ugh), and I wrote this with one arm tied behind my back (mmm ice cream cone).

The only problem I had with the Gamecube pad was that it tore my thumb to shreds playing CvSNK2, its the only pad to ever give me a blister. I'd still take it over the 360 d-pad though, i'd rather risk physical injury than keep accidentally throwing diagonals.
