Star Soldier
Konami collections (Gradius, Parodius, Salamander, Twinbee)

Stay away from Sengoku Cannon unless you're hard up.

Actually...there should be multiple threads like this around here...

I assume you mean the remake - if so, there's also the "Soldier Collection," which isn't great as far as the trimmings are concerned, but a decent deal if you're not planning to buy a PC Engine. There's also the Yuna collection if you want to play Sapphire for less than a mint. The Konami collections should probably be your first stop if you don't own the games elsewhere though.

Yes, the remake of Star Soldier. It's boss.....yo..... Unlockable sound test after beating the game makes it all the better.

I really hate to say it, but the remake of the first Cho Aniki might be worth picking up......depending on your tastes.

How is the port of Saphire? The screenshots make it look like it's letterboxed

Best thing about PSP is the ability to play ps1 games.

If you are running m33 firmware yu can easily obtain eboots of r-types, raiden project etc etc.

Lot of the games support tate mode, its really a portable shmup machine.

Well, if you play it at its original screen ratio it's going to be letterboxed on the PSP's wide screen - the thing never had tate mode in the first place, so it's not a lack of that. You can play the game "stretched" to fill the screen, but obviously everything will look a bit different.

I haven't played the original game so I can't compare it, but either way it costs only a fraction of the TCD's price tag, so for most people it's probably the only realistic option. Personally I'm not overly fond of the game, but you could definitely do worse.

I played the hell out of Blazing Star and Progear on my PSP after I installed the CFW. The Neo Geo and CPS2 emulators are pretty darn good. Not as good as playing on a cab, but not a bad way to kill time away from home.

Try and find the final burn emulator for PSP, loads of treasure/Cave games run brilliantly on the PSP. Get the component out cable an outpuit to your tate setup.

Its not as polished as the CPS2,Neo-Geo emulators but its updated frequently

Gradius Collection? (I think that's what it's called)

Also, R-Type Command, though it's more of a strategy game than anything.

Very bland and not exactly challenging. I would call it doujin-like. If you can find it on the cheap, pick it up. Otherwise, there are much better purchases.

You can easily and LEGITIMATELY buy psone shmups playable on the psp from the playstation network store.

R-types is the best one on the u.s. store, but jp store (buy a pre-paid yen card from an importer like ncsx.com) also has delta, einhander, g-darius, raystormforcecrisiswhatever, raiden, etc.
