MAME: Popular Science
Some time ago I found this article in Popular Science that you might find funny. Take a look at their custom MAME "cab"

buying ANY roms for a MAME cabinet is illegal. But then you gotta think, "oh wait, this is the internet"Pixel_Outlaw wrote:In their article they mentione that you can buy packs of ROMs for MAME how can that be? I'm fairly sure buying ROMs from a unlicensed middleman is HIGHLY illegal.

LOL, *buying* MAME roms... what a joke.Phil12 wrote:buying ANY roms for a MAME cabinet is illegal. Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
They were perfectly correct, assuming they were referring to Starroms (who legally distributed most of Atari's back-catalog for MAME and has greater ambitions that never came to anything). Unfortunately they stopped trading before this article was published so they probably just cribbed that bit from somewhere out of date.null1024 wrote:LOL, *buying* MAME roms... what a joke.Phil12 wrote:buying ANY roms for a MAME cabinet is illegal. "A quick search will turn up hundreds of these ROMs, as they're called, on Web sites and in newsgroups, but since many are still copyrighted, downloading them from anyone other than their creator could be illegal. Fortunately, some companies now sell packs of legal ROMs, offering a dozen or more games for $20 and up. There are versions of MAME for any computer system (and even smartphones and PDAs), so you can simply play at your desk using your keyboard."
But I digress, Popular Science is a shell of the former mag. It is now 25% advertising. The content is always pushing the "green" agenda and there is very little discussion of science. The latest issue just talked about how fat people are getting. They always include at least 1 hybrid gas/electric concept car that will never see release and also pages of high resolution photographs of stupid subjects that just fill space.
