Teach me to modify my arcade stick

Well I just picked up my SFIV arcade stick.


Of note, I guess I make a mistake when I pre order as I got the cheaper model rather than the expensive model.

Anyways, I figure I may as well modify the one I got.

I'll need to know where to get the parts and what work is necessary to do. Will I need to solder? Drill? I have the tools for such and am handy to do those works if necessary…

I am not familiar with parts terms like 'JLF' and the like so I will need clarify when reference is made to such parts…

What I know is that:
I am going to try a seimtsu stick as I am understanding they are more firm.
For buttons, I would be fine with Sawna buttons.

You could go with both Seimitsu joystick and push buttons all the way or if you prefer, mix & match. Whatever floats your boat. ^_~

Or you could order both Sanwa & Seimitsu joysticks + push buttons and see how they feel tactile-wise. Either way, you will end up with a world-class Japanese spec arcade layout anyways. ^_~

The classic SNK produced AES console arcade stick uses a Seimitsu made short-throw joystick setup...perfect for those crucial/critical arcade-type gaming sessions where absolute precision is needed at a moments notice. ^_~

Well, the first step is probably to open it up and see what it looks like inside. If the parts are soldered in or otherwise weird, the mod could be more difficult, but hopefully it's just quick disconnects (little metal bits so you can attach the button wires without soldering).

that stick is designed to be super easy to mod. open up the bottom panel and you'll see a 5 pin wire harness going to the joystick and 2 quick disconnects going to each face button. disconnect all this, pop out stick and buttons, insert new stick and buttons, reconnect everything. done.

At first I was upset in the mix up with the pre-order… but I will be happy with the modification of the stick I have.

Sonic, I preordered one as well and plan on doing the same mod. I guess whichever one of us does the mod first can show the other how to do it. But like brokenhalo said, it's supposed to be dead simple; no soldering involved.

I'm not sure if I'm going to swap out the buttons, though. I'm not nearly as picky about those as I am about the stick. Regardless, let me know where you plan on getting parts from.

Alright, cool. I might not even do the mod depending on how good the default stick is. After all, that Virtua Stick USB is still my all-time favorite. I'm interested to hear your before-and-after opinions; I'm sure others would be as well.

Well, I got one as well. I am gonna be ordering some Sanwa parts for it. Buttons and stick probably. Will definitely want to try that Seimitsu stick out some time when you get yours Sonic.

I just got my stick together and its good to go.

For Davey, what kind of stick are you looking to get?
There is some additional work or more like some extra steps if going with the Seimitsu stick. I had to rotate the mounting plate on the stick to get it to fit in the proper direction and I had to "guess" which screw holes to use lol. Not to difficult but I did test before I closed it up and the first test only would press 'up' as I had the wiring harness in backwords. second test it was in the wrong directions which led me to have to rotate the plate.

Otherwise, it was easy and I was done in about 30 minutes. Buttons are so easy a caveman could do it. and yeah, the buttons are straight up sanwa knockoffs through and through… but the stick seem to be rubbish. I was looking at it and that washer is just grinding away at the pcb… I just gave it to my daughter for her to play with…

Anyways, I love this Seimitsu stick. nice, tight, responsive, and snappy

With Xbox 360, I have learned better to play with arcade sticks. So much, I cannot play RFJ with a pad
