I went out to my local movie theater today and checked out Liongate's remake of My Bloody Valentine 3-D. Set me back nine bucks and got a personal pair of Real-D 3-D glasses to keep as a momento. As a bonus, I had the entire movie viewing room to myself to watch the MBV 3-D film...perfect opportunity to pick the best seat in the house -- the way it should be. ^_~
The 3-D effects of this particular film are quite impressive, especially if shown with an DLP movie projection system. Of course, special equipment is needed to show the newest 3-D films been cranked out by the Hollywood film industry.
It's been a long time since a horror/slasher genre film has gotten the proper 3-D treatment. I'd have to say that today's advances in digital effects in terms of making 3-D films today are better than how it was back in the early 1980s with 3-D theaterical films such as:
*Jaws 3-D -- circa 1983...was the 3rd film in series to get the 3-D treatment & starring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gosset Jr.
*Friday the 13 3-D -- circa 1983...was the 3rd FT-13th film in the series.
*Amityville 3-D -- circa 1985...was the third Amityville film in the series.
*The Man Who Wasn't There 3-D -- circa 1983 with Steve Guttenberg
*Space Hunter in The Forbidden Zone 3-D -- circa 1983 with a young gal by the name of Molly Ringwald
*Metal Storm: The Destruction of Jared Syn -- circa 1983
*Starchaser: The Legend of Orion 3-D (all animated film in 3-D circa 1985)
*Treasure of the Four Crowns 3-D -- cheap-ass Italian made 3-D film brought to the USA back in the day
*Parasite 3-D (with Demi Moore in her first film acting debut back in 1981 + Stan Winston handled special effects of the actual Parasite creature puppetery as listed in the film credits.)
(If you think I resorted to using wikipedia for the above early 1980's 3-D movie list...it's all just from recollection of useless general trivia in my ol' noggin with extra info added in for completeness. Of course, when the above films were later released on VHS and LD formats, they weren't presented in 3-D format due to the early 1980's home theater setup not being able to properly show them but rather in 2-D format. Sure with today's technology, those same above listed films could be given the proper 3-D treatment to view at home.)
Of course, to proper view those early 1980s 3-D films, one needed a special Polaroid gray colored 3-D glasses. I still have mine from back in the day to go see a 3-D film double feature of Jaws 3-D & The Man Who Wasn't There in 3-D...this was back in the year of 1983. Today, most movie theaters don't have the double feature billing...Grindhouse was the rare exception with both Planet Terror & Death Proof shown back-to-back (at least in the USA). ^_~
Sure, the obiligatory tits and ass is shown in this new remake of MBV 3-D...looks awesome in digital 3-D. ^_~
Even George Lucas has considered re-releasing his original Star Wars trilogy in 3-D...that, I'd like to see. The re-release of Tim Burton's classic stop-motion animated classic of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was given the Real-D 3-D treatment courtesy of Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic division (ILM) a few years back.
Even the new Real-D film presentation of Coraline 3-D, a stop-motion animated extravaganza, is impressive with the latest in digital 3-D effects. Makes me wonder how many years it took to do all that stop-motion animation process for the Coraline film anyways. It's been said that it took three years of working non-stop for the stop-motion animation effects featured in Burton's TNBC film.
Even Disney/Pixar jumped on the 3-D film bandwagon with it's CGI-based Bolt 3-D film shown in select movie theaters. But most folks weren't willing to pay the required $9.00 USD to go see this film and sadly, it tanked at the box office.
PC Engine Fan X! ^_~

I liked the movie quite a bit. But the 3-D and not all gimmicks stuff is what made it worth the price.
Real-D hurts my eyes after awhile though.
I got to keep my glasses. 'Sucks they didn't work on the super bowl ads, haha.
'Be down for more niche 3-D stuff outside the family-friendly.
I wrote a bunch of shit about that movie here http://www.robotpanic.com/?p=3654
