Retro Game Challenge

Post by dnbiola »

This comes out for the DS today in the U.S. It has two pseudo-retro shmups: "Cosmic Gate" and "Star Prince."

Anyone picking this up today? :?:

I usually don't pre-order- this I did. I saw the pics, read the desciption, and I was sold. Saw reviews after I pre order (I don't really trust reviews- especially not to drive a purchase) that didn't turn me away- rather excited for this one. I hope it does well :)

You should check out the Gamecenter CX series, it's great fun to watch.

I really find the series frustrating to watch. Having heard so much about it, I thought he'd be a better player, but it's like watching my dad bumble about. Every episode I've seen is just 30 minutes of him failing and acting mildly embarassed. The Mega Man 9 episode was especially painful.

I thought that was the point of the show, with him being a bad player and all.

Got the jap' version : Star Prince is just GREAT ! (the whole game is anyway !) Kind of a new Soldier.
But too short... and too easy... Fortunately, thera are a few things to do if you want to score.

Yeah, from what I've seen it looks like a blast. It is certainly a great concept for a game. Hopefully, the promised sequel will come out and have some more shmups too!

No euro release announced yet? :? I tried the japanese version once, but this is the kind of game that REALLY needs translation.

Well, he has beaten Ghosts 'n Goblins, Milon's Secret Castle, and a few other notables.

Playing this now and the storyline is sooo funny.
I actually was a kid in the '80s and , believe me, it was all Miami Vice, padded shoulders and drinking Baileys at parties back then :D

Star Prince is a lot of fun, and so is Cosmic Gate, even. Haguruman is a fantastic improvement over "SonSon"-type games too.

GCCX (the game (and TV show)) gave me the willpower to try out old, old Famicom games and not discard them after 5 minutes.

GGCX2 is coming out on DS in Japan on Feb. 26, I believe.

Just 1CCd it, both loops. :D

Awesome stuff. I don't recall the last time I had so much fun out of a DS game. Which is funny considering these are basically new Famicom games. :D Really awesome work, though! :D

Thanks for reminding me about this one.

Any major regional differences outside of packaging & (a passable) translation?

I am not aware of any, but the translation has been fun so far. Probably not terribly accurate, but it's well done and funny. I enjoyed the bit about wanting to shift your weight as you turn corners in racing games. :D

I also enjoy young Arino, who I assume is voice acted by Yuri Lowenthal, screaming stuff as you play games. It really is perfectly timed and matched with the gameplay and sounds quite like two boys playing Famicom games, eyes fixated on the screen in 8-bit anticipation. :)

Just curious, does this game/compilation(?) have any more modern shmups, or are they all 8-bit style? I'm not that big a fan of shmups from that era.

They're all brand new games, just done in an old style.

So far they're all 8-bit-ish, but Star Prince is very fun and quick moving. Well, they all are actually... :)

I'm playing this (DS on standby as I write this) and it's awesome. The magazines, manuals and hints are such cool touches as are the in-game cheats.

I just watched my girlfriend play this. Cosmic Gate plays exactly like Galaga. Star Prince plays exactly like Star Soldier. The enemy formations, pacing, power-ups, etc. are all almost exactly the same (aside from the occasional Star Force formation thrown into Star Prince).

I really enjoyed star prince. But, now i see that its been ripped of star soldier. In any case, has anyone actually beaten star prince? is it the same level over and over, with different colored enemies each time?

The magazines are definitely EGM inspired. One of the editors is named Dan Sock.

I saw that, but it doesn't address what i was asking. To me the game seemed to repeat itself with fighting the same level 1 boss on level 2. Fighting the same enemies but in different colors. Is this the jist of the game?

That's my question too. Isn't the terrible d-pad making diagonals painful?

It addresses the first question you were asking though.
Anyway, it's basically the same levels. However, the latter stages are quite harder. Other than that, yeah; that's the jist of it.

I hope the sequel comes here. It will have another shmup, a GB Tetris parody, a cool looking parody of NES platformers called Demon Returns, a sequel to Gaudia Quest (telling from the site and look of the game, a GBC parody? 1991 dated, odd.), a Pac-Man clone, a Game & Watch parody, an adventure game, and some special versions of games from the first collection (including a MSX-ized version of Cosmic Gate and a score attack version of Star Prince). Here is a trailer from it.
