Yeah, just read it. Amazed the Henry Cow didn't get a 1 page write-up, but this may have been on purpose--people who want the Henry Cow box have already subscribed, but using a whole page to review a really obscure album is a huge help to active and important artists now.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Om. Pretty much their entire discography. I keep trying to find one record that sucks more than the others... but the whole damn thing is fucking solid.

I think Pilgrimage might be my favourite, followed closely by Conference of the Birds.

Good to see you're enjoying some of the stuff I uploaded. I'd love to get those tracks on vinyl. "Leech" through "Everything" were all originally analog recordings, so I imagine the vinyl has got to sound sick. As far as Om goes, all of it is gold. I just burned all the recordings sequentially and listen to them that way. The only things I don't have by them are the split with Six Organs of Admittance and the Jerusalem live LP.

"The 5 full-length discs in Box 1 cover Henry Cow's career from the pre-Virgin Records days up to roughly 1975. These are all previously unreleased recordings, some live, some demo, some studio, all sonically enhanced by Bob Drake's painstaking re-mastering. We are treated to everything from early BBC sessions to somewhat later live improvisations, alternate recordings with Robert Wyatt, to the full 18 minute version of "With the Yellow Moon And Half Star" (The Bacchae). There are many compositions and improvisations new to anyone who only knows the official releases; The disks also document a number of one-off projects and events and - where different or remarkable enough to justify inclusion - live versions of parts of the LP repertoire. The hefty, 60-page booklet is chock-full of historic information and exclusive photos. The 4 full-length CD's + 1 DVD in Box 2 cover the Cow's career from roughly 1976 to the band's demise, with an emphasis on the later era. Nobody knew that this 75-minute concert broadcast of the band existed, so the DVD is a real boon, and has spectacular versions of "Beautiful As The Moon", "Living In The Heart Of The Beast", "March", "Erk Gah", "No More Songs" and a great, improvisational piece. The music discs are also excellent, and include as highlights the original version of "Joan", as well as a 12 minute, hitherto unreleased piece by Lindsay Cooper, and great versions of "Erk Gah and "Viva Pa Ubu". There's also some immaculate improvising, including a 17 minute foray from the original RIO Festival, and Fred's "Awake Against Sleep" from the Western Culture sessions - and all that's just the tip of the iceberg."

I saw the Buddah machine down at Amoeba and thought about picking it up.

As far as the Henry Cow box, while I am digging it, it is more immersive than expansive though--which is not a bad thing, but I was hoping to discover a whole new side of Henry Cow. If you don't have their studio albums + Concerts, that is where you want to start from and much cheaper than buying into this mammoth set. Also, Concerts is genuinely a great and representative live album. What I'm getting at here is that while I love this box set and it has definitely increased my appreciation of the band, it is really far more than most fans would want, and it seems like the really essential lost material could have been paired down to 3 or 4 discs, instead of 9.

All that said, I'm still very happy I bought it!

I've been assessing my musical purchases of the last few years and have decided that I need to be more practical in my purchases for a while. As you say, I don't have all of Henry Cow's studio albums yet and I'm quite eager to hear Concerts, but I don't really need to get any new music for a while.

At Christmas I got given a cabinet with around 100 clasical records that I haven't even scratched the surface of yet. I'm aware that I may be wasting some brilliant music by letting it collect dust.

I think I might restrict my purchases to just those bought direct from the artist at gigs for a while. Make sure my money is going to the right place. Will give me the chance to digest some of the 100s of albums that I have been neglecting of late.

What Classical? Classical is like a life-long endeavor as far as appreciation goes. Just Bach alone could take years (and well spent years at that.)

A good selection.

The complete Beethoven symphonies, a smattering of Mahler, some R. Strauss, some Bach, lots of Handel, plenty of the 'classical' operas and excerpts (Wagner, Puccini, etc, etc). Some of it not to my tastes but a good stash nevertheless.

Yeah, its like the beginning of 20th century classical. Great stuff. It is weird though how Debussy and Ravel are big names, but none of the people who followed in their footsteps (like DARIUS Milhaud for instance) are at all known.

Bach to me is one of the most rewarding aspects of classical, but he has so much music it is almost impossible to know where to begin. That's why you need someone like me around

Thursday - Common Existence is a great, great album.

Thursday is one band I can definately say had their sell-out album (A City By the Light Divided), and then realized they were douchebags and un-sold out. They released the Envy split, signed with Epitaph, and released this amazing album. Everyone should check it out.

John Coltrane -- Stellar Regions

This is one must people don't hear. Released well after John's death by his wife, it is material from the 66-67 but is very smooth (not screaming ascension type stuff) and is a very welcome addition to my collection. Would make for a nice entry point for anyone interested in the post-classic quartet sound.

Picked up some good charity shop vinyl today for a total of around £7

Richard Strauss - Der Rosenkavalier
Hair the musical (intrigued after reading Japrock Sampler)
Great Organ Works (feat. Saint-Saens)
Pictures at an Exhibition (Moussorgsky, orchestrated by Ravel) and Bolero (Ravel)
Another random record with Grieg and Saint-Saens
Stravinsky - Firebird (the complete 1910 ballet rather than the 'suite' I already have, on a first listen it's superb although well loved with a few pops)
To top it all off I got a mint condition vinyl box set of the complete String Quartets of Mozart played by Quartetto Italiano.

So much for buying less music.

On top of that I've been immensely enjoying the varied output of Alistair Crosbie, who takes the drone and noise aesthetics to a most beautiful conclusion. All of his material is superb. I especially recommend the abrasive work he does as a part of Eye Shaking Kingdom with Nacht Insekten.

While having a bath I just enjoyed Shoenberg's Op. 25 for Piano after finally understanding the 12 tone technique. I may even have a dabble myself.

Mono's latest album, Hymn of the Immortal Wind, is amazing. I love how it was recorded, with their biggest orchestral ensemble to date.

cmoon you have gave me a lot of interesting new music to listen to through the course of this thread, these guys outside of being psychedelic have sorta building noise sound that reminds me of stuff like joy division and also a bunch of shoegaze bands...wonder if you care for any of that type of thing.

If you at all enjoy Joy division, I think you might like A Place to bury strangers, I saw them live will Nine Inch Nails along with Boris and I enjoyed them.
