Where to visit in Russia?
I'm thinking of visiting Russia in spring. Where should I go?

Definitely a tough choice. Been wondering this myself as well.
For me, out of those 2, St. Petersburg would be the way to go.
Why? The Hermitage seems like one of the most awesome musea in the world and city layout/planning which supposedly was influenced by Dutch city design (whatever that is btw...).
For Moscow, I'd love to see the Red Square, Kremlin and the supposed "secret city" under it. For some odd reason I fear the presence of the mafia/organized crime there more though.
Not in a hurry to get shot down for approaching some mob chick or getting into an argument with some mobster while on holiday.
Outside of these two options it would be Kamchatka though. jus for what's left of the nature there.

You need to do both. Seriously, I've been to both, and they're both well worth visiting. This is easier than it sounds, there's a nice overnight train you can get, the cabins and bunks were a lot nicer than I was expecting, very 'quaint'. Places to see:
St Catherine's Square, at least that's the name I have stuck in my head - sadly it was many years ago, but it's a place the local artists sell their paintings, they're very cheap in our money and some are really nice, I still have one on my wall.
St Basils Cathedral - it's as stunning up close as it is in the pictures.
The tomb of Lenin - funny story - it was on a school trip (final year) when I went, I was walking in there with a friend, and guards kept tapping our coat pockets. We'd take our hands out to show we didn't have anything, walk on and put them back in. This happened a few times and we were getting slightly paranoid until one of the guards explained that it was disrespectful to have your hands in your pockets there.
The Winter Palace.
The above are all essential. Some more advice is try to avoid the people who will run up to you to ask for money, or try to sell you garbage. If you buy/give to even one, you're marked and will get swamped until you leave the area. They pick the people who look most like tourists, and often are scams run by criminal gangs.
Of course this information was correct as of nearly 20 years ago, so things have probably changed a bit
