Why is DoReMi Fantasy held in such high regard?
I remember the game getting lots and lots of praise from various people, so I decided to download it to my virtual console.
Don't get me wrong, i think it's a nice enough game, but up to the point I played it (halfway through the fourth world) I can't see anything about it that's truly outstanding in any way. To me, the game looks and plays like a bog-standard platformer. It's solidly crafted, yes, and there are no obvious flaws, but that's pretty much it. It's neither very original, nor are there any technical achievements, or level design that's beyond merely competent.
So, what am I missing? Does it pick up later on or am I plaing it wrong in some way?
What's so great about DoReMi Fantasy?

I actually have this game and have played it a bit - but never had the change to properly sit down. From net reading it is meant to be something special, but like you, it didn't jump out at me. Perhaps it just needs more time?
I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who's been through it though.

In my view this sums up the game nicely. It's a very solid and charming game. There's nothing half-baked about it.Herr Schatten wrote:To me, the game looks and plays like a bog-standard platformer. Honestly I'm not really sure either. And I'm a 2D platformer fanatic. I've tried it lately. I liked it, don't get me wrong... But I got frustrated early on when I found out you have to collect stars or something before you can progress. And I can't find the big star on half the levels, so I gave up pretty quickly. Hate shit like that

If more 2D people would go to the 2D Gaming Forum, there would be more people to talk about 2D games with other 2D fans on the tootie gaming forum. It's 2Dlicious. For real yall
The AVGN just review Milon´s Secret Castle. One of his more entertaining recent videos, since this game actually seems like it´s taunting the player.drboom wrote:Maybe the love for it is because the first one, Milon's Secret Castle was so confusing and badly designed that they get bonus points for good execution. I dig it, but after I played through it once, I don't have an itch to go back and play it again.

It's a good game. Good graphics, sound, fun to play. You're right in saying it's not too original, I just like to draw attention to it because it's a good game that people might not have heard of.
I have bad taste though and often get as much enjoyment of the 7/10 games as I do out of the 10/10. The flaws don't really ruin it for me. If it's good instead of excellent, well, it still isn't bad...
The prequel for NES is pretty poor. Milon's Secret Castle or something. Don't remember why

No, not at all. That said, I do enjoy DoReMi Fantasy for what it is. It's just that all the hype surrounding the game made me think it was supposed to be something special, which it isn't, so when it turned out it was "just" a good game (albeit rather generic), I wondered if I was missing something.Neon wrote:Schatten going on your original post it doesn't seem like you found much wrong with the game either...do games really need to be innovative and groundbreaking to be worth playing?
