Sounds like an epic shmupmeet in the making, drboom!

I have lots of vacation in 2009, so let me see if I can make it work.

Consider me a definite maybe!

Just wish I could locate a Dolphin Blue cart...

That's so awesome that Recca is going to be a centerpiece. I remember showing that at a KC meet and tried to get someone to play it but everyone couldn't pick their jaws up off the floor at how insane it was. Haven't tried Alzadick, that'll be cool.

I have just about every US Genesis shmup, including MUSHA, and a couple import stragglers like Twin Hawk. Anything else I have a Genesis flash cart for, ooo. Are you able to play Genesis carts on your Megadrive? I also have some Famicom stuff: Over Horizon, Gradius II, Final Mission. Some interesting non-shmup stuff like Splatterhouse Wanpuku Graffiti and New Ghostbusters II. On PCE I have Gradius I and Galaga 88 (shrug).

Hoping Steve will be able to make this one since it's always nice to split gas, but I'll probably try to make this one even if work has him tied up. Chicago kicks ass. I showed my friend Sean some pics of the Missouri meet and he might want to see what's up too. I think he's interested in the bullet hell stuff even if he won't give a try, but he does enjoy the retro stuff.

Hello!

Davey linked this thread in the Great Lakes thread.

My wife and I may be interested to attend.

What is the proposed time frame?
(My friend and I have drove to and from Chicago in a day to catch the Bulls/Pistons game)
I would like to save lodging for folks with longer travels as Chicago is only a 4~hour drive for us Detroit folks.

BELOW IS THE ORIGINAL POST FOR Chicagoland Autumn Carnival 2009 SAVED FOR POSTERITY
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The time has come again to celebrate shmupping in the great city of Chicago!

The Chicagoland Autumn Carnival 2009 will run from Friday, October 2nd to Sunday, October 4th. There will be four candy cabs (2 Egrets, 2 Astro Citys). There will be a slew of pcb's and console titles and a vs. Castlevania cab.

All out of towners are welcome to stay with me. My place should be big enough to accomodate anyone who wants to stay. For those of you looking for Hotels, there is a place right around the corner from my place called the City Suites that's on Belmont. I usually see student types there, so its probably some sort of hostel.

There will be beer, some food and lots and lots and lots of games.

SCORING CONTEST
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Title #1: Battle Garegga

- There will be a round robin, bracketed high score contest for Battle Garegga with each player only needing to beat the score of the player they are up against to advance.
- We will be playing on the zakk roms (Nippon Ver.) with all of the Mahou characters unlocked and with rank reset after each credit of play.
- There will be two cabs running simultaneously for the contest and you must be present for your turn to play.
- Contest will start at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Should be a fun one. Please do a bit of play and research before the contest and best of luck!

Title #2: Final Soldier - 2-Minute Mode

- This will be a pure high score contest, played on the PC-Engine Duo-R. Highest score wins.
- Scores will begin to be tabulated at 1 p.m. Saturday and the contest will finish at 10 p.m. that evening.

Mystery Contest: ????? sponsored by Mark Alpiger and Classic Arcade Gaming DC

- At midnight on Saturday, there will be a mystery, non-shmup title available for a high scoring contest which will test the twitch gaming skillz of even the toughest gamer. This will be a classic title, one plenty of you have played, but few have mastered.

Best of luck to you all!

Please RSVP in this thread if you plan on attending. I will be sending PM's with my addy and other contact info as we get closer to the date. Please shoot me a pm or an email at devilscoot 'at' yahoo if you have any questions.

EDIT:
1-31 **ADDED pcb's from gunbird18**
**Date confirmed for February 28th**
2-03 **Recca/Alzadick Scoring & Contest Rules**
**took off games list to make space in the first post**
2-20 **Added a few pcb's**

After the Missouri Cave Matsuri, I wanted to host a shmup meet here in Chicago and I'm finally ready to set it up!

The shmupmeet will be taking place the weekend of February 28th, that Saturday. Those who are planning on coming in from out of town are more than welcome to stay with me overnight on either Friday night or Saturday night (or both). It helped alot getting to stay Friday and Saturday at gunbird18's place, so I'm extending the same offer here.

I'll be hosting this at my place, which is by the intersection of Belmont and Clark in Chicago, IL. Should be easy for most Chicagoland folk. I'll post the exact address once we get closer.

I want to also run a Summer Carnival '92 contest during the meet, playing both Recca and Alzadick for score (caravan modes only). I have yet to figure out how to weigh the scoring, but there will be some sort of prize for the winner.

Please let me know if you are interested in attending and if you have a supergun/pcb's/console games to bring, all the better!

Systems:
- 2 x Astro City cabs (thanks in advance Dave for bringing yours!)
- NEC XM29 tateable monitor
- Sony 29in TV non-tate
- Mitsubishi 25in tateable HDTV
- PS2/PS1 HRAP (w/USB adapter)
- JP PS2
- US PS2
- JP/US Sega Saturn
- NES
- PCE-Duo-R
- SNES/SFC
- Sega Genesis
- Sega Mega Drive

As far as pcb's, we'll have on hand:

Ketsui
ESPrade
Dangun Feveron
Strikers 1945
Battle Garegga (Nippon Ver. w/hacked roms)
Progear
Deathsmiles
Raident Silvergun
Soukugurentai
DDP DOJ
Armed Police Batrider Ver. B
Raiden Fighters
Viper Phase 1
Sky Shark
Dogyuun
V-Five

...and a helluva lot of console titles - bring whatever you want. Check with me if you'd like to know what's being brought already.

SUMMER CARNIVAL '92 - RECCA & ALZADICK SCORING AND CONTEST RULES:

So, I have figured out the points system for Recca/Alzadick and here's how it will break down:

Scores will be taken for Score Attack (2 minute mode) and Time Attack (5 minute mode) for each game and the first five places will get points. The one with the most points at the end wins There will be a grand prize for the overall winner.

The game modes work like this: In Score Attack, the object is to score as many points in 2 mintues as possible. In Time Attack, you want to score 1 million points as fast as possible with the limit being five minutes.

Points scoring breaks down by place like this:
1st place - 7 points
2nd place - 5 points
3rd place - 3 points
4th place - 2 points
5th place - 1 point

The only other rule I'm thinking about implementing is that you need to post scores for each of the titles and each of the modes, so each player will have four scores tallied to be eligible for an overall score.

I will be taking scores during the event and everytime you want to post a score on the score board, you'll have to make sure I see the score so I can enter it on the sheet, which you will initial to ok. Pretty easy stuff. I'll abstain from the contest proper as well.

Here are some strats for Recca:
Recca ST
Can't find anything for Alzadick, but the Carnival mode is very similar to Super Star Soldier Carnival mode as far as scoring.

Thank You drboom!

Several of us Great Lakes folks will be meeting tonight and we will discuss this on our agenda.

I imagine that we (or at least my wife and I) will likely arrive around noon. We would plan to leave Detroit around 7-8am and should make it into Chicago around noon.

Is there any construction out that way? Last time I was out that way it was 2006 and there was construction along the skyway.

Also, is there anything console related that anyone would like to see?

I am most excited to gather with new people and to share the excitement!

Sonic R - not sure about the construction past Indiana, but there isn't anything major once you get into Illinois that I know of. Should be a quick and easy trip!
Szycag - I have a Genesis and a Mega Drive, so no worries there. Got to bring MUSHA - that'll be a good one.

I'm thinking about coming for this, depending on how much I have going at that time and whether I can wrangle one of the family cars for a weekend (and my brother to share the driving). If I do come I'll bring my (small) laptop with MAME and 2 HRAPs, though it looks like there will be plenty of systems anyway.

Thanks for hosting this, I'm sure it will be a blast.

My girlfriend and I may be able to come, we won't know until closer to the date though. I could bring my Dreamcast with any backups, and my xbox for mame or any of the other emulators on it.

Hopefully I will be able to make this. I'll need to see what my work schedule looks like; I should know later this week.

Guess I could bring my Psikyo PCBs, but nobody wanted to play them last time...

stuminator - It'd be great to have you here - love to witness your mad Batsugun skillz again!
You pretty much owned those Psyiko pcb's - especially Dragon Blaze. They're a little daunting to play for sure, but you should bring them if you plan on comming. I'm sure they'll get a few playthroughs.

tOyrobo - definately bring the DC if you can make it - we could use one here.

croikle - MAME laptop will work great - I have a VGA port on the back of the NES XM29, so that should work out great!

This is pretty cool - I sent Hudson a letter mentioning the shmupmeet/contest and asking for any sponsorship they would be interested in providing, not expecting anything - and they are sending some free download codes for Omega Five! Very cool. 8)

With Recca as a centerpiece, it would be sweet to find someone who has Pink Sweets and coerce them into attending.

My wife and I are going to try to borrow her mother's miniature van in which would be able to seat 7.

In regards to contributions, if there is interest, I could bring my Japanese Xbox 360. At the time of this meet, I should hopefully have DDPDOJBLEX and Shooting Love 200X. Otherwise, it looks like everything else is well covered.

I am looking forward to this event and extend my Thank You to drboom for hosting!

OF note, would it be desirable to have duel screens of games of Recca and Alzadick? I could bring additional copies for a head to head simultaneous play!

Also, is there any interest in Twinkle Star Sprites competition?

Free stuff is always good. Hudson rocks :D

I'll update the top post with this info as well.

Oh - and I did get another 27" TV for the event, so we'll be pretty good with TVs/cabs. With gunbird bringing his tateable TV, we'll have 5 TV's and two cabs. Looking pretty good. :D

DEFINATELY BRING YOUR JP XBOX and DDODOJBLEX! Love to check those out. I'm actually trying to decide if I want to take the plunge and get one to play BLEX and Deathsmiles, and I'm super stoked to try BLEX.

DEFINATELY BRING YOUR COPIES OF RECCA AND ALZADICK! We should be able to have some simultaneous play, although it really depends on how much the other systems are getting played. Do you have a REcca famicom cart or a boot for NES (or emulated)?

As far as the TSS competition - probably not this time, but bring it and let's see what happens.

I haven't managed to kill all four spheres at the same time in Alzadick, is there a huge bonus for doing that? The first set comes up straight on instead of diagonal so it seems like B shot would be good for that but I always end up killing one set faster than the other. At least Recca has videos on youtube I can study...

Will do on bringing the above mentioned. According to Play-Asia, DDPDOJBLEX ships on February 16, in which it takes 3 days to get to my home. Crossing fingers for no more delays!

My Recca cartridge is a Famicom cart, so I may have to ask Ayanami to bring is NEX along. - I play through a Super 8 converter on my SNES.

If this is an issue I should bring my actual Famicom. It's the AV style (pic)

I still need to get some dogbone style pads. I bought two cheap chinese pads with turbo buttons, but those d-pads are really bad at picking up diagonals so they're mostly only good for Mega Man.
