Newly Modded PS2

Post by Metal Gear Okt »

Alright, I finally got slidecard for my PS2, so i can boot original imports. Now, I'm faced with a decision. What do i get? I've already got Mushihimesama preordered, and in the meantime, I'm stuck deciding between DoDonPachi DOJ (~80) and ESPGaluda (~65). I've got most of the other great shooters either for the Dreamcast (Shikagami 2, Psyvariar 2) or for MAME (Dragon Blaze, Strikers 1945, etc).

So basically, it boils down to either DOJ or Espgaluda.

DDP if you think pain is fun.

Galewda if you think pain is fun to a lesser degree.

Boils down to your skill.

I'm pretty good. I was able to 1CC Ikaruga after a ton of work, and yet I can't see myself doing that again for, say, Gradius V. I love both DoDonPachi and ESPrade to an insane degree.

It just comes down to which scoring system you think you will enjoy more. If you think you'd like an advanced version of DDP's chaining, DOJ is the way to go. If you like the idea of putting a game into slow motion and letting the screen fill with bullets... go with Galuda. Videos of both games should be pretty easy to find, decide for yourself.

I'm leaning towards Galuda. Is there anything else I'm missing? I know to stay away from XII, and reaction to Shienryu II has been somewhat muted, but are there any other lesser-known titles? Is it worth it to track down Psyvariar if i enjoyed the sequel?

The Psikyo packs if you don't have them already (especially dragon blaze).

And of course all the ps1 imports.

As much as I love DDP DOJ (I've just bought the board! :P ), i still prefer Espgaluda. I love the music in Espgaluda so much more than DOJ and the whole Kakusei system is a whole lot of fun. It's far less punishing that DOJ, although the final boss is a right c**t!
I wrote a review for Espgaluda here if you want some more info on it. I'll do a review of Dodonpach Dai-Ou-Jou soon enough.

Get Galuda first and foremost. Especially if you liked Ikaruga. The scoring system in Galuda is simplistic yet highly addictive. The game is challenging, but if you can 1CC ikaruga you can 1CC Galuda with a similar amount of time put in. I have DDP DOJ too, and it's a fine game, but Galuda is much more fun for me.

As for psyvariar, I don't care for any of the games, but if you have to choose get Revision over Medium unit. Or just get the Japanese 'complete' edition which comes with both on one disc.

Neither. Psyvariar is a mediocre series. Despite GWG's sketchiness, I bet it is still a much better game. Psyvariar feels like a doujin.

EDIT: anyway, doesn't 'medium unit' include revision?

Heh. I've been at this for a while, but I was hoping that a DC could satisfy my shmup love this generation. Sadly, it was not to be.

Neither, get this version

It's cheap, contains both versions and is well worth it IMO.

Looks like they changed the cover of Complete Edition. Also "Xplosive" is printed on the cover. Is that some new distributer?

I was going to go in detail about the company but I found that the best description was on their own homepage:

"Xplosiv is the largest multi-platform value software label in Europe, with plans to launch in the USA at the end of 2005. Headquartered in the UK, Xplosiv also has offices in the, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The Xplosiv brand launched on PC CD ROM in 2000 proving a great success in the UK and overseas due to the group's license wins with, Sega, Ubisoft, Taito, Activision, Microsoft, Vivendi and CDV. Xplosiv successfully entered the PlayStation®2 games market in 2004. Xplosiv has successfully published over 300 titles on PC CD Rom and 30 titles on PlayStation®2.

Xplosiv have plans to release over ten new PlayStation 2 titles in 2005, with over thirty PC CD Rom titles due to release in 2005."

There ya go. They've also released Gunbird 1+2 on the PS2, if you want more budget priced shmup-y goodnes. No higscore saving tough, in Gunbird that is.... :/
