Completing the game without continuing is called what? Sorry for my lapse in memory. I'm still new here!

Awesome. Thank you both. We are putting in "challenges" (similar to Xbox Achievements and PS3 Trophies) in our game, and I wanted to make use some shmup lingo.

Personally, I am out of the loop. I have always called these games "2d shooters", and barely know any of the language.

Thanks for the glossary. That will help a lot! :)

Back in the era of the Golden Age of Arcade Games, most arcade games went on ad infinitium (until reaching the so-called "kill screen" like in the classic Donkey Kong cabinet). It was possible to 1CC those classic arcade shmup titles like Capcom's Hyperdyne Sidearms. You could choose to continue where you left off but at the expense of inserting another quarter/token. Back in the 1980's and into the 1990's, you tried to make your money last and by learning to play better with less money spent. Eventually with enough practice, a 1CC session was due anytime. ^_~

Sidearms was unusual in that the player entered his or her intials at the very beginning of the game as opposed to entering intials on the high score ranking screen at the conclusion of the game. Strange but true.

Would be cool to include a fake "kill screen" (garbled graphics) that fades out with a message appearing "perfect game" (if you no-miss the first loop). If you die during the first loop the game just loops.

Imagine how pissed off you'd be if you finally clear the game on one life, then think this triggers a bug! :D

I really like it. Will there be a demo available when it's out? Even though I've got a 360 I've never visited the marketplace so I don't know
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

I don't think it will come out in the xbox live arcade section, but the "community games" section it will.

Are you talking about my game, Duality: ZF? The full game will be released on February 28, 2009 and that's also when the demo (trial) will be released as well. Quite excited to see the response. If it is good enough, we will work on Duality 2, the sequel. The truth is, we will probably work on Duality 2 no matter what the response is, because we are such huge 2d shooter fans! :)

Anyone with Xbox LIVE, feel free to add me. I'm "Xonatron":

This is true. It will be in "Community Games" which should be found in the same place as "Arcade" under the "Game Marketplace" section.

How difficult is it getting a game up onto XNA? I know Microsoft omit most of the red tape that is associated with XBLA, but do you still need a publisher? Do you have to pay Microsoft anything up-front? I know it's all peer-reviewed and the development environment is Visual Studio/C# but that's about all I know about it.

Can you do a ps3 version?
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Isn't that more like the stone age of arcade games? I'd say, in MAME-powered hindsight, that the "golden age" was the late 80s/early 90s. :P
