Children's shmups?
Children's shmups?
Do they exist? There are children's games where a level or two are of a shmup nature I'm sure, but what about whole games?
Re: Children's shmups?
Yes, they exist. I don't remember any specific names, but I remember at a summer camp when I was young, there was a computer lab with macs that we could game on, and there were a couple of shmups that were definitely meant for kids. Not all that good, and they weren't arcade shmups, but there you are.320x240 wrote:Do they exist? "I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."
I've been waiting forever for a reason to post this link:

It's also a "pacifist" title!

It's technically not a shmup because it's not auto-scrolling, but for the most part Operation Neptune fits this for sure. Well, it's not aimed at little kids (the box says "ages 9-14"), but it is a learning (math) game with a submarine which you go around with, shooting enemies (with ink clouds that only temporarily stun them and do not kill them) and sometimes having to solve a math puzzle. It was a Super Solvers game, so like most all those games it was pretty good.

Awesome, Nate. I'm going to test this out on my 5 year old tomorrow.

Yeah, my little girl will be 6 in July. A few months ago I walked into the room and she was playing it; of course I was like, "Holy sh...what the...!!!"--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Operation Neptune is fucking awesome (or it could be the little kid in me speaking with rose-tinted glasses), by far the best learning game, the only one I would say was a good game in its own right. I remember I would intentionally miss all the math questions out of laziness and impatience and to make the game actually challenging (and angering the comp lab teacher), so not so good from a learning standpoint.A Black Falcon wrote:It's technically not a shmup because it's not auto-scrolling, but for the most part Operation Neptune fits this for sure. Ancient Empires (a puzzle platformer) was decent too but not quite on the level of Operation Neptune. The puzzles were actually pretty good but the character moved like a clunky snail. Also the best part of TLC games is the supervillian is such a shameless ripoff of Dr Wily.
