depends on what subs you can read or if you want dubs. I hear there is a lot of french dubs and spanish dubs of things.

Tokyo Godfathers takes place in modern day Japan, hence no sci-fi storyline to boot. It centers around a motley group and their mis-adventures in finding an abandoned baby. Hilarity ensues at times. Like trying to find a "wet nurse" who'll breastfeed the baby when she is hungry. ^_~

Golden Boy. And watch it in English because the guy who voices the main character is fantastic at showing emotion.

Here's a few:

Bubblegum Crisis - So, so good, fantastic cyberpunk anime
Gunslinger Girl - awesome animation, heavy story line, ridiculously good soundtrack
Gunbuster - I may have watched this ten times and it never gets old. A bit melodramatic, but excellent nonetheless
Desert Punk - fun, great story line

These are my suggestions, just off the top of my head based on what you listed that you said you didn't like. Sounds to me like you are more interested in action anime, or stuff that has a story line, but not really drama stuff. I prefer my anime subbed also, but that is just me. I tend to get much more out of it by reading, rather than just watching like a drone.

MD Geist, part 1 and 2. Violent, bloody, and overall great. One person mentioned this above, and honestly I wish more people talked about this one. Reminds me a lot of Fist of the North Star in some ways.

One that no one ever mentions, and is actually one of my older favorites:
Detonator Orgun. I'm fortunate enough to have all 3 on laserdisc. The DVD release over here is from 2002, with all 3 episodes on 1 disc.

Ergo Proxy, which was also mentioned prior, excellent as well.

If you watch Bubblegum Crisis like someone mentioned above, make sure to follow up with Bubblegum Crash as well. It's only a 3 OAV at an hour each one, but they are good even on their own. You can watch them and easily catch on to what is going on, without having seen the original series.

One that a couple of people mentioned above was Gunbuster, and I really hope they are talking about Gunbuster 2 - part 1 is from the late 80's, and is not so hot compared to the newer one.

Desert Punk is pretty good as well, what I did watch of it.

I personally enjoy Bleach as well, but there is like 200 something episodes now I think, and there is no telling when they will catch up here in the US.

The older Appleseed series, as well as the 2 newer movies are good watches as well, especially the 2 newer movies. The newer one is directed by John Woo.

Ghost in the Shell anything. This is about the only thing I can tolerate dubbed, besides Akira.

Death Note is excellent as well, what I have watched of it.

Gantz is another suggestion that I have not watched all of myself.

Iria: Zeiram the Animation - excellent 6 part OAV, lots of action. Another one of my older faves. There is also 2 movies (Zeiram 1 and 2) that aren't bad if you enjoyed the anime, that are based loosely on it.

There are plenty of others that I have either watched, know of, or want to watch, but those are all that come to the top of my head for now.

Ghibli is a given ;-)

Haibane Renmei is fantastic, The only disapointing thing about it is there is only 12 episodes. I think i got so hooked i watched them in two sittings
Ghost in the shell is also fantastic both the series and the films which are both fantastic. Just remember that the series and the movies are kinda like alternative time lines two possibilities. I had to explain it to my friend why people were alive in one and not the other and why X and Y were happening

Hahahaha...yeah. Well I had the skills, I would. The dub is OK, but the narration is really unnecessary. *shrugs* What can you do? (I know, force cmoon to make a fansub...)

Disregard the Berserk anime and go for the manga.
