Help naming a certain shmup.
Help naming a certain shmup.
Hi I am new here, but I love shmups and I forgot the name of a shmup I played when I was young, but I have plenty of details to help pinpoint what it could be.
This is an arcade shmup that I believe took place on earth. The roster had around 8 different planes. Each having their scenario as well as their own unique bomb. One plane had three people in it and their bomb transformed their plane into a giant red robot that I think had a drill and revolved its head like a lighthouse. Another plane I believe was black and its bomb turned it into a firebird/phoenix that burned whatever it touched and shot fireballs. Another plane was your basic plane that did a backflip and did a bomb like raiden's as a bomb. When you beat the game depending on whatever plane you chose, you had a different ending, I remember one being a wedding. Unfortunately I cannot describe any of the bosses or enemies to you, but the bosses were huge and later had different phases.
I hope I gave you enough details. Finding this game has been eating me away. Either way thank you.

seeing as that ones solved, can i take a turn? REALLY sketchy details, but may as well try. It was probably released mid ninties from the graphics - the only other thing I remember is fighting a big monkey (seem to remember it being a hovering monkey too..) - probably a mid/end of level boss. I remember it being a hori...but it might be a vert. I guess there aren't many shmups with monkeys in them!
I played it at an arcade at a campsite in Devon (UK) while on holiday about 8 years ago. Can't remember anything else about the setting/ship etc, sorry...

An arcade shmup PCB with a monkey as an end-stage boss? Hmmm, that is definitely an odd-ball arcade PCB if there was one. Sounds like it's the one and only Toki PCB, right? I recall that Toki got a very limited arcade PCB print run courtesy of Fabtek for the USA arcade market. ^_~oli_lar wrote:seeing as that ones solved, can i take a turn? PC Engine Fan X! ^_~
Hori + monkey = Donkey Kong 3, with Stanley?
Or how about Seta's "Caliber 50" ? Not a "shmup," it's a top-down run 'n' gun. Has all the monkey you can handle, though.

Picking at nits here, but I thought the first stage boss is just some weird dude. You play as a caveman-turned-into-a-ninja-monkey, and there's definitely a vehicle being piloted by monkeys as a sort of midboss in the first stage. That thing hovers though. Lots of floaty jumping monkeys in that game.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:An arcade shmup PCB with a monkey as an end-stage boss?

I know that one of the end bosses in Sonic Wings Special was a monkey (and was perhaps taken from an earlier Sonic Wings? Not sure), but that was a vert. Harmful Park also had you blast a gorilla, but that was never an arcade release. Offhand it sounds like something that Boogie Wings would have had in it, but I've never played it, so that's a total guess...I don't think any of the Parodius games ever had monkey bosses, right?
Sonic Wings 2 has a Monkey as the very last boss I think.

What are the odds? First SW3 and now SW2.

Go to 4:40 and you see the monkey that you speak of. The game is a vert btw.
was there a character roster with around 5-8 characters? I remember playing as a dolphin in some weird vert that had a monkey boss. Unfortunately, i can't remember the name of it and the arcade i played it at is goneoli_lar wrote:seeing as that ones solved, can i take a turn? REALLY sketchy details, but may as well try. That's as good a definition of the Aero Fighters series as I've ever heard.nash87 wrote:was there a character roster with around 5-8 characters? I don't know if Aero Fighters is what Lar's looking for, though, unless he's wrong about the game being a hori.
Thats the one I think, at least thats how I remember the monkey (on a hovering platform thing)...though for some reason it was stuck in my head as a hori.John845 wrote:Aero Fighters 2/Sonic Wings 2?oli_lar wrote:seeing as that ones solved, can i take a turn? Strange, is that the last boss then? I've always attempted to 1CC shmups whenever I found them in arcades, even before I properly got into them a few years ago, and that would have been my first time playing that game. I remember I didn't get past that boss, but I would have done well to get up to there on 1 credit!
I must be getting rusty in my old age

Well, technically, it is a hori. But the gameplay is vertical.oli_lar wrote:though for some reason it was stuck in my head as a hori.
