Radiant Silvergun...

Post by ST Dragon »

It’s been said by many, about the famous Radiant Silvergun, that it’s supposed to be the best Shoot Em Up in the whole world and of all time & that its suppose to utilize the best Saturn programming to date.

The game is surely the prequel of Ikaruga as the level design, enemies and that yellow diamond thing, look very similar.
I love shooters with many mid & end level bosses but this game seems to be completely overwhelmed by them. You spend more time fighting the bosses than travelling through the levels. This combined with some RPG elements (Dogs) & levelling up your weapons, leaves the impression that it’s not a shmup, but rather an RPG/Strategy/Puzzle shooter or a Vs Duel.

Another interesting factor is that the levels seem to be continuous, that kind of explains the existence of so many bosses & huge enemy battle ships.
Some of the Bosses like the Falcon, the huge Mecha Turtle & the Caterpillar Boss look incredible!
What disappointed me in RS is the great difficulty level that makes it almost impossible to complete on Saturn mode. The weapons do not impress, neither visually or for their effectiveness.
The coolest weapon is the “sword”, but only when you manage to powered it up. (Which in the later levels doesn’t happen very often I afraid)

I would still love to see this game visually enhanced using an emulator. PSX games look so much better on ePSXe Emu than on the real Playstation. Imagine R.Silvergun with more polygons and hi-res textures. If that’s not cool then what is?

Generally it’s a very cool shooter, that disserves to be placed in the hall of classics, but it’s not the best in the world and is definitely not worth 150-200$ which a lot people out there are willing to pay.
I don’t understand all the hype about this game? You’ll find many other cool shooters that are as good if not better.

I thought the weapons were very effective, and the bullet patterns aren't THAT hard to avoid. It just takes a lot of practice to learn attack patterns of the bosses.

I only found it hard until you power up your weapons a bit.

If it's too difficult, turn the difficulty down and give yourself a few extra lives and a more generous extend rate until you learn which end is up (and later on you can also use slo-mo and a visible hitbox to practice). This is one reason why I tend to rate Silvergun over Ikaruga; despite the fact that it's more difficult, it's also more accessible.

Thanks.

I've been playing it for the past 10 months! (not continuously of course)
;)

My saved score is about 770000000. I want to reach 999999999 & unlock the 4th option in the menu.

By the way, does the score counter reach zero once I pass 999999999?

I've always wanted to know this. Im on about 550000000 at the moment. The 4th option is player speed apparently. I havn't unlocked it yet though. I would have ages ago if my official memory card hadn't wiped its self a few years ago taking all my RS and Nights saves with it.

I have my saves in the internal 32K RAM, in the Action Replay 4M plus & inside an regular SEGA backup cart.

After losing all my carefully saved positions in CastelVania SOTN (PSX), I try to take some precautions. :)

I might try it again this weekend, but the only reason I would play RS again would be for the score. I don't find the gameplay or fun factor of RS that great imo.

Oh and for the graphics & music too...

The fourth option is unlocked with time logged playing (it may be score as well). It takes 50 hours I believe. I've got all options unlocked... then again I've got more than 250 hours logged in Radiant Silvergun.

In my humble opinion, it's not just the best shooter ever, it's the best game I've played. Great combination of music, visuals, atmosphere, gameplay in a slow-manic-thinking-man's shooter. It's not for everyone, but I've never seen its equal. If you can one credit this beast (starting at the default weapon powerups), you are truly a master - this game throws more multiple "oh-shit" scenarios at you than any other.

Well I don't find RS that exciting as a game.
Isn't that original enough for you? ;)

On this board... no.

Every other week someone has to come up and bitch about how they didn't like RS... and then they all get pissy when someone mentions they don't find Cave games original.

Do you guys think RS is worth $200? I've never seen a game go for so much and am curious what people think about that.

The real question isn't "is RS worth 200$?" but "is ANY game worth 200$." After all, some games go for even more than that. In any case, as with anything else, it depends on whether you personally like the gameplay style or not: if you do, the money will be well spent, but if not, you can always sell it back on eBay or whatever and get back (at the very least) most of what you spent.

Also, 200 is on the high side for RSG, 150 for a good condition copy without spine card is a more realistic estimate in my experience.

If the game is actually enjoyable then yes, I would say a lot of games are worth their prices. If I hadn't gotten Taromaru for $80 back in the day, I would feel more than justified paying $350-400 for it now just because I love it so much. Same goes for Radiant Silvergun and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

$80! Christ!
Taromaru is without a doubt one of my all-time favourite games, only I didn´t get it "back then"

Paid a fortune for it, but as you correctly state, with Taromaru it hardly matters.

DAMN. It's doubled in price from about 3 years ago. Wow. Brilliant game, and a real SS showstopper.

if i had a japanese saturn and could play it on my cab id say so, but only cause the cost of some of the boards ive gotten. the cheapest one i got was around $150, up to over $300 for ketsui, which was well worth it. the cab sorta killed my desire to play shooters on anything else.

course an st-v mobo and the rs cart could be had for around that price or less, but it doesnt have the extras. not a huge deal personally, other than the extra bosses in saturn mode (i like the story fmv too for that matter). if i ever get a horizontal screened cab id just go for the st-v set rather than rigging up a saturn and getting that version.
