SHMUP Wiki!
SHMUP Wiki!
Dear shmuppers,
I join your community today to proudly introduce you a Wiki project about STGs! This is meant to be a community database about shmups, and in no way it is meant to replace great sites such as shmup.com or shmups.com !
Here it is: http://shmup.wikia.com/wiki/Shoot_Them_Up!
Please note that any participation is welcome, mostly to add relevant contant and to improve the poor layout. And making an article about SHMUPS.com would be a great idea too!
I would like to especially thank Devilmanozzy for his great help for settling things and give the opportunity to this wiki to have already a nice and neat content!

The only section I read was the Touhou section.
It was copy/pasted from the Touhou Wikipedia article word-for-word, with content actually taken out.
The Subterranean Animism section is directly copied from the Touhou Wiki page for it, and only a small piece of it is stolen.
The Ikaruga article is directly copied from the Ikaruga article on Wikipedia.
Way to plagiarize, and do a lousy job of it! I've seen better copypasta on 4chan.

That isn't my point. They didn't even write that, they took someone else's work and posted it on their wiki.worstplayer wrote:Isn't the whole point of a wiki that you can fix such things? My english sucks too much to write lengthy articles, but few sentences about your favorite game shouldn't be a problem for native English speaker.

I wouldn't find it as irritating if it merely did what Wikipedia already does. What irks me is that it's just shameless word-for-word plagiarism. xD-SGN- wrote:I saw the copypasta, I'm not responsible about it and I'll take time to fix it this this week-end when I have time. Why? I'd rather just go to the original sources that were copied from.

Well I guess I should try and defend myself. Yes I pasted wikipedia content as taken from wikipedia. It was meant to be a starting point only. As in, to build on, not as the whole page finished type thing.
As far as for the name of the wiki.....I sort of don't get it either. However, gotta go with it.
As just said, the content(for the most part) is so far Wikipedia so yes I'm looking to update and sort move to more active wiki than a build a few pieces thing.
I still can't believe my first post on this board is defending the Shoot them up! wikia.
As for the person who started it, I wish they'd either sign in more often, or grant me the "mod" pos.

Whats 4chan? Seriuesly I don't get out much. As far as the stolen/ plagiarism thing, to a point your right. How do you suggest it is fixed? Theres a reason I don't post in Forums much, and all the negative comments with no offering of help is one of them.Momijitsuki wrote:The only section I read was the Touhou section.

As for the Touhou Series page, I posted a link to the Touhou Wikia for a reason. Until I can get my hands on those games, (which for a poor college student may be awhile) I wont know what to write. I love the vids of the games of youtube but its not so easy to write a page on something you don't own.
Eh, this almost makes me want to start another shmup wiki and do it right (I had been toying with the idea anyway, even before this one came up).
If even the guy who created this (mislabeled) site doesn't care about it, then why should anyone else? I have a feeling this will be abandoned pretty soon, and then get deleted, along with everything you put into it. I honestly wouldn't invest any time in this.
EDIT: Typo

Wikia is not something you can claim. Personally I think having users names at the bottom suggests some type of reward to people or something which isn't good. There are pages at some wikias I'll actually logout before posting to avoid my name on it.ZOM wrote:No, but if you pick up that pile of shit and claim it your own... then yes.Mortificator wrote:If a lot of monkeys shit in a pile and someone takes a picture, is it plagiarism?

Currently Me and another user are adding to it. Hope to get it looking good in a few months. The guy who started the wikia didn't even know how to build a page. He had locked the mainpage and was asking me to tell him how to fix it. He wouldn't unlock it, so I had a wiki-helper do it.Ceph wrote:Eh, this almost makes me want to start another shmup wiki and do it right (I had been toying with the idea anyway, even before this one came up).

Wikia strictly states that a Mod isn't even in control. The site is to be the type of thing where anyone can add, edit or make pages to it. All a mod does there is block users and delete bad pages.Ceph wrote:Who controls (=is admin) of the site (webspace, domain, database)? Honestly, this sounds very much like it will end badly.
Someone who doesn't care should not be in charge of a project like this.
Many wikia's run fine without a mod at all.
I feel pretty bad about this, because it originally sounded like a good idea. Then I clicked the link, which lead to a broken page, then I read the rest of the thread. Congratulations on a total disaster; if you're going to make a wiki and build information on it, maybe you should at least know a thing or two about the genre before trying to help. STG is ShooTing Game, not Shoot Them Up or whatever.
And the one mod you have doesn't care (much)...
Nah, if I'd create a wiki, I wouldn't make it completely open (to counter vandalism/general stupidity) but instead give moderator status to people who are really interested (for instance members of this forum), and who know what they are talking about.

Anyways while thinking about it, the guy was also blindly posting my user name here, which is a bit weird.
Is wikia even the best way to go? I mean, you give up an awful lot of control and are practically at wikia's mercy:
Again, this doesn't sound like something I'd invest time and effort into. Maybe something hosted elsewhere would be better.Often Wikia has expanded by acquiring an existing wiki's domain name, userlists and databases from a founder or co-founder. The original wiki is then shut down without consulting its editors or wider community and the domain redirected to Wikia's version of the project. In at least two cases[29][30][20] the content is used under a Creative Commons non-commercial license, raising the question of whether the wikis themselves can legitimately be sold to Wikia for commercial use.[31]
Once a wiki is on Wikia, there can be problems with inappropriate advertisements or advertising in the body text area.[32] There is no easy way for individual communities to switch to conventional paid hosting, as Wikia usually owns the relevant domain names. Those communities who have left Wikia find the company continues to operate the abandoned wiki using its original name and content, adversely affecting the new wiki's search rankings.[33]

Its not something you do for credit. Thats for sure. Its a easy way to get up information on a desired topic. You are right that if you really want to make a site, you should go get a web site, not start a new wiki. I submit to a good 10 wikia's these days, mostly adding a sentence or two to a given page. This is my third wikia I have been very active in, as I really do like the subject matter, and I do want the wikia to continue and to grow. Thats why I do it.Ceph wrote:Is wikia even the best way to go? I mean, you give up an awful lot of control and are practically at wikia's mercy:
