Extremely popular shmups you don't "get"
There are some shmups out there that have lots and lots of rabid fans, but you can't figure out for the life of you why? Post here.
For me, it's the 8ing games. Sure, they're nice games, some of them have good graphics & sound (some of them are butt-ugly), but most of them have too many flaws to be considered masterpieces:
1.) bullet colour. making a game harder by making bullets more difficult to see sounds like the definition of retardedness.
2.) level design - in many of them, the exact same enemies & enemy pattern turn up again and again and again.
3.) the rank system - dying on purpose to keep your rank in check? How dumb do you have to be to think that that's a good idea?
I'm no 8ing expert, but I have played my fair share of their games, and those things are just so damn annoying.

Gradius V - just can't warm up to it. I liked the previous Gradius version and I really like most other shoot'em ups (no matter if vertical or horizontal), but I don't like what Treasure did to G5. From the game design it's imo to obvious that Treasure did the game and the game's really the complete oposite of G. Gaiden which I really liked.
Re: Extremely popular shmups you don't "get"
Its clear from your three remarks that you haven't played them nearly enough. My advice is to skip Garegga, and try playing Bakraid for the clear (not for score) as its much more accessible.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote: I'm no 8ing expert, but I have played my fair share of their games, and those things are just so damn annoying.

i'd like to spend more time with them and learn to appreciate them, but i've got to go with raizing. i've only really played ibara (watched superplays of other games), but it's too hard for easily correctable reasons. main thing that annoys me is that everything blows up too crazily; all the flames and debris tend to obscure the bullets. i also get kinda annoyed at the whole concept of suiciding to control rank, as it goes against most shmup logic.
Is the thread about shmups where you understand everything about them, but just can't like it and don't know how others like it so much; or, where you don't understand everything about them and thus don't know the rest? Because the opening post sounds closer to the second category.
For one, I don't understand why so many people are obsessed over ChoRenSha68k, and probably a few others, but nothing in regards to extremely popular shmups, I'm afraid. I've happened to figure out what's likable about pretty much every of them that I've heard of.

Radiant Silvergun - Boring & tedious IMO. Not that I really played enough to harshly judge it's gameplay but I just don't like it.
Oh, and I don't get all the fuss about galuda's soundtrack either...
(the game itself is lovely though)
Raizing rules.
Suiciding is fucked up, but fun to figure out when/where to deplete your ship stock.

some people just really wanna be different, and it usually extends into their music tastes and things like that. normally i wouldn't mind, or even mind that such closed-minded people always seem to gravitate to the internet, just a shame they're always the type who are so vocal about it.

I don't "get" DoDonPachi…
I used to hate this game, but then I bought the game for the PlayStation from NTSC-J a few years back and I enjoy playing it and have fun… BUT I still do not "get it"… I don't chain, I don't collect the bees with any consistency, I like the B type helicoptor but I get best scores with C-Shot. In short, I like the game as for fun playing but for scoring and chaining, I couldn't care less, and I still don't "get it". DDP is the hype machine and for me its a nice late 90s shooter and I play it for fun and will never be bothered to go beyond that at the expense of my enjoyment.
Next up, and I will get people mad but fuck it.
I do not get and I do not like ESPGaluda. This game just doesn't work for me. I seldom sell games I buy but after several years of owning this game, I spent a whole night playing it, couldn't even get on the score screen and I sold it. I suck so bad I couldn't get past the third stage and my scores were even worse. ESPGaluda is the game everyone recommend but for me it turned me off of Cave game and I think the game is garbage. Oh well what ever. For me ESPGaluda is probably one of the worst games ever… but when I first got it, I thought it was cool… but then the whole idea of playing for score took some fun away, and the kicker was to watch the DVD packed with the game, and I was completely turned off (this even made me not like watching super plays for a long time- but I watched the RFJ super play packed with RFA and found it very helpful so now I don't dislike super play like I once did)…
tl;dr
DoDonPachi - dont get it but like it
ESPGaluda <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< just about every other shooter

I don't know about "not getting" certain games...
I don't like the R-Type series at all. I "get" the reason that some people do, but it's just not for me. I also don't really like most Psikyo games, a few Raizing games, and Touhou games. I understand the appeal of all of them, though.
Something I do NOT get, however, is how anyone can be a shmup fan but not like DDP, and to a lesser extent every Cave game. To me Cave IS the shmup genre, they make the best games that exemplify the genre. I don't "get" how people can not like them. It's very strange to me. Disregard scoring, because some of Cave's scoring systems are a little meh.

your comments can't touch nor harm the port ever. For me ESPGaluda is probably one of the worst games ever…
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'm not a fan of bullet hell games. Partly because I'm not good at them and partly because I didn't grow up on them in the arcades. I'll play anything like Gradius, Raiden, R-Type, U.N. Squadron, Darius, and even Omega Five. Not so much anything produced by Cave or similar groups.

With all the guides and information that is available on Raizing games, I'm amazed some people still can't understand rank and suiciding. When did adding an element of strategy and risk become a bad thing?
