Does anyone else have to stop playing after a successful run

Post by alpha5099 »

I just can't keep playing once I've done well. If I get far in a game, I just have to call it quits. Because if I try playing after that, I'll start dying at the very beginning of the first level and make all sorts of stupid mistakes. Sometimes, very rarely, I can manage another good run, but it usually takes a good half hour or so before it clicks.

That's why I can't sit and play a game for hours on end, it has to be short bursts, because I just lose it after a good run.

I have the same problem. Haven't done a SINGLE good run in Batrider since I 1cc'd it. I must I've wasted ~20 credits getting back on track until I moved on to Garegga. :/

Me too. Doesn't always happen though - sometimes I get this second wind of sorts where I just know I can do even better (like if I figured out how to deal with a boss or something) but most of the time after a good run I feel so spent I have to stop.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

This is exactly my position right now. I just 1CC'd DoDonpachi for the first time not too long ago, which was actually my first 1CC ever, and it seems that every vert shmup I play now is harder to get through. I think the insane manicism I experienced with DDP managed to some how drain my refexes & eye/hand coordination skills a bit. Plus my eyes and thumbs are still a bit sore. That game has alot of bright colors. 8)

I guess that's the price one must pay for entering the "manic zone".

So yeah, I've kinda taking it easy in the last couple of days. I haven't been shmupping all that much. I think I'll give my shmup addiction a little breather (probably a week or two).

After a good run on Espgaluda I like to play the Arrange Mode, because by then I'm more used to huge amounts of bullets.

I don't stop after a good run, but I usually compensate for success by playing horribly for the next few minutes. Haven't figured out why.

It takes me forever to "warm up," so no I don't stop after a good run (all things relative, of course). Usually after the first half-decent run I have a few good ones. I stop when I ruin a perfectly good run with something incredibly stupid, usually.

I shake after good runs or 1cc's. Just one of those things. I do it after a shot while hunting, and also after games of pool. Just one of those nerve things that gets put aside until after the act. As such, my next runs in shmups normally suck

Just yesterday I had my best run in Battle Garegga-- got well into level 4 and on top of the high score board. Today I'm afraid to go back.

Yes, just about every time I have a decent run. I usually switch over to another game, and then suck terribly at whatever I switch over to.

This happens to me. Though not's after a "good run".. it's just after a "best run". If either a beat my high-score in the game, or get further than ever in a game, the next runs will be crap. I rarely ever really stop, because I am still having fun with the game after all, but I start to die where I usually don't.

But this only lasts one day usually :)

I think it's time for me to quit when I can't clear the first stage without loosing a life.

Did anyone notice that long-term hiatuses from certain shmups will actually make you better at them?

Yeah, I shake too and my heart races, then my hands tend to slip off the joystick from time to time :(

Typically. Though I was on FIIIYA with Batsugun Special the other night.

But yeah, typically I cease playing a game for an extended period of time after I 1CC it. The exceptions would be Blast Wind and Hyper Duel. :D

Depends on the game. If it's a shorter game like Strikers or DDP, I'll usually keep playing after a good run because I feel like I'm keyed up. If it's a longer game, I usually stop after one run regardless.

Yeah, that happens to me with a lot of games, actually. You gain a little bit of detachment from the game, and that allows you to perform better because you're not as involved with it. Happened to me earlier playing Advance Guardian Heroes, I finally managed to beat my time attack record on the second try... I wasn't even going for it, either. I was just playing the game. Just playing can be a good thing sometimes.

Stepping away from a game for a while helps me forget all the details and relearn them, with better routes and habits if I'm lucky. Yeah, some detachment is good.

Definitely. I can't even begin to fathom getting to the end of a Parodius game, dying, and then trying to start over. I've gotten to the last level of every Parodius I'm yet to 1CC... but I can never do that follow up run to snatch the 1CC. Way too damn long and draining.

I usually use a good run to spur me on. The great games always come after a few good ones. It's like getting warmed up to go for a run.

Something long like R-Type Final and Gradius 5, yes. Shorter games like Gunbird or something, no.

There is actually a study confirming this phenomenon. I can't find the press release at the moment, but it is there somewhere on the web.

Two groups played a simple video game. Afterwards the game was changed a bit and one group played the new version immediately and the other group waited for some time. Guess which group performed better?

If you have never tried doing this on a regular basis, I can recommend it.

Hrm... I don't know if it's after a single good run, but after I finally get a game "down pat" and either 1CC it, beat it, or get a new HS in it, then I need to take a break. I suddenly decide I'm just too cool for bombing and die like crazy.

That study makes sense. But the game was changed a bit. The group playing immediately was trying to play the same as before, while the group who waited had some time to forget some specifics and be able to adapt when they played again.

But that really explain why we're better when the game is the same as before?
