If this has been discussed before i'm sorry, but i did use the search without any luck.
I only play shmups very casually, especially compared to RPGs, but the very first game I rented on the SNES was Gradius III. I suffer from a somewhat short attention span compared to some gamers, so I didnt even come close to beating it then, but I do like to play through classics now and then, so I fired up zsnes and save stated through it like the spineless coward I am.
The point is, I happened to have the volume turned up when I got to the (mostly symbolic) last boss, and so I heard the weird, grainy voice clip. I've done enough listening to song lyrics backwards to check out urban legends that I can sort of recognize when a sound byte has been reversed, and this is the sort of thing that tends to pique my interest, so I fired up windows sound recorder and some other random program off the internet to record and reverse the voice. It turned out that it had been slowed down as well, which I should have realized from the start, but when I finally had it sorted out, I STILL couldn't make out what was being said!
All I could pick up was something about "double" and "laser", and I could be wrong on that. It really sounded like part of the clip had been slowed more than the rest, or something. The other possibility is of course that the sound is too low quality on the SNES to hope to understand anything.
Anyway, I was hoping someone here could shed some light on what that stupid bacterion is saying, and maybe even explain how to properly edit the clip to make it intelligible.

This doesn't sound far off the mark, I think.adius wrote:All I could pick up was something about "double" and "laser", and I could be wrong on that. It really sounded like part of the clip had been slowed more than the rest, or something.
IIRC, Gradius II for the Famicom does the same thing at the final boss. I have a "Famimaga Video" from 1989 or so where they show the final boss who sounds like he's simply growling at the player. But they sped up the video playback by several factors and the voice became clear: "Missile, Shield, Option, Speedup", etc.... It's just some of the in-game samples played slowly.
So I'm sure Gradius III on the SFC does the same sort of thing. No secret messages, I believe.
