I did it! Magic Sword: 1CC!

Post by Specineff »

This game by Capcom is nothing short of a bast. Your health drains regardless of you taking damage or not, there are trapped chests, the accessories vanish after two floors of use, and even some items will level down your allies, which are the meat and potatoes of the game.

No save-states, of course. Just a couple of pause breaks to eat, and go to the bathroom. I started from the bottom floor, and made my way to the top, using only one shortcut that the game invariably presents you with regardless of the route you take.

Well, here's to that &*^%$#@! piece of money-sucking arcade:

For the pits you made me fall into,
For the chests that were full of traps,
For the accessories that do nothing (crown and gauntlet),
for the little dragons that escape your attack and spit homing rings of fire,
for the skeletons that endlessly pop out of nowhere and block your slashes and carve you to shreds...

Low blow, man. Low blow.

Okay, in all seriousness, I had to abuse the game's flaws, and exploit whatever weakness I could find, mainly the use of the thief and the golden scrolls.

Good job!

I just saw a small youtubing of said game. That last boss looks really annoying, actually all the bosses look like they are pattern-heavy. Like a deadly game of Simon only without the lights and beeping.

They don't all need to be cleared/played, however. It doesn't take a *thing* away from the accomplishment, believe me...but still, it needed to be clarified.

I started this past September, and have been practicing every 48 hours. There are many things you can exploit about the game, but it doesn't make it that much easier.

And yes, like Boagman said, you don't have to clear all the 50 levels. There are a couple shortcuts that will get you five or 10 floors ahead (Thus, I ended playing through only 30 or 35 floors). You can start at the top tier and finish the game by playing only 10 stages if you want. In my case, I tried from the very bottom and took the Big Man with me till I found the Thief for the second time, then leveled him up like crazy. Once he hits level five, the smack starteth to be layeth. He is the best ally to take along, and it's because of him that I was able to reach the last tier and not get raped by the trapped chests, and find the hidden ones that give you magic books/grimoires, blue apples (two bars of health), lapislazuli chunks (80K points, helps a lot to reach the extends if you have the Double Score pendant), and magic scepters to power up your charged attack.

Sorry, I got a bit carried away. This game made me cuss like a drunken sailor, and almost break my PSP in two after so many cheap deaths. Hence my caption at the end of my first post.

I am grateful for the comments, everyone. :D

Awesome! MS (1990) Seems like an unofficial sequel to Black Tiger (1987). I was confused, but I klov'ed both games and they seem similar.

Ah, only 30 or 35 floors? Pssh come back when you've beaten 50 :P

No but really this game is pretty brutal... doesn't help that I'm naturally awful at beat em up/fighting type games.

I'm in awe of anyone who can 1cc this game. This game is really pretty and colorful -- and hates your guts.

Congrats on 1CCing that beast, I really like Magic Sword and played it a few times with the intention to a 1CC, but I always end up credit feeding.

That's one of the very best, most enjoyable things about Capcom arcade games of that era...sure, you could credit-feed your way through them and have a *great* time doing so, but you almost always knew that, in many cases, if you honestly wanted to, you could practice enough to get better and better, and basically learn to 1CC any of these kinds of games.

When MERCS was brand new, I love, love, loved that game, and continued to get better and better at it as I went. Eventually, I ended up being able to consistently 1CC the game using only three weapons all the way through, including the original shot you're stuck with at first. Grab the flamethrower at first opportunity, and then several levels later, grab the grenade launcher, and go, go, go!

The secret of MERCS, of course, was in the use of your bombs, which you needed to conserve until absolutely necessary, and once you got to the final boss, you needed a reserve of several just to stay alive. It was an awesome game all the way around, and like Specineff, people were in awe that I could 1CC it...but it was worth all the work.

Awesome Capcom goodness.

I could become Mr. Masochist and try this on PSP now that I have the Capcom Collection which has this game included

On second thought, maybe I'll start w/ the slightly neutered SNES version first...

Awesome job! I LOVE this game! The SNES port isn't perfect, but it is still pretty good.

Y'know, I've just recently been trying to do this myself on CCC2. I kind of gave up but maybe I will go back to it. I've already kicked the crap out of Black Tiger but that game is really easy. Thief, huh? Interesting. Knight is of course the most powerful followed by Dragonman. But power isn't everything.

Hey, Doctor. You may want to know I totally suck at Black Tiger, so kudos to you for being able to master it. The Knight in MS is surely the strongest, but he can only toss one volley of 3 spears at a time, while the thief and dragon man can fire two volleys of 3 to 4 projectiles, which means more crowd control and hits per second. With either the golden pot or gold scroll accessories, you can always ensure you're getting good stuff and keeping your allies healed, as playing without them is suicide.

P-Hat: You don't have a hacked rom. The game allows you to start from either floors zero, 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40. I myself decided to take the longest possible route to level up my allies and get the highest possible score.

Good luck.

One, you could be a master at Black Tiger in a tiny fraction of the time you spent on Magic Sword. Just saying. It's like Ghosts 'n' Goblins Lite. Really lite.

Two, what about the Amulet? You don't use that? Doesn't it make it easier to get the fairies that appear when you reach a certain amount of points?
